Didier Drogba Backs Tanzania’s AFCON 2027 Plans With Offer to Support Football Development

Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has pledged to support Tanzania’s sports development drive ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, following high-level talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Drogba, who is currently visiting the East African nation, confirmed his willingness to collaborate with the government after being invited to contribute to preparations for the continental tournament, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

The competition, scheduled for June 19 to July 17, 2027, will mark the first time AFCON is staged across three countries.

President Hassan has already asked the two-time African Footballer of the Year to serve as an ambassador for the tournament, a role expected to focus on promoting football development and strengthening infrastructure across the country.

Tanzanian authorities believe Drogba’s experience at the highest level of the game could play a key role in shaping long-term growth in the sector.

Speaking after the meeting, Drogba expressed his appreciation for the invitation and highlighted his desire to contribute meaningfully to Tanzania’s sporting vision. He also praised the government’s investment in sports, noting that increased funding reflects a serious commitment to development.

Officials from the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports emphasized that Drogba’s involvement could help improve youth development systems, particularly through better management of academies and training facilities.

Plans are already underway for knowledge-sharing initiatives aimed at building sustainable structures that will benefit young athletes beyond the tournament.

Beyond infrastructure, Drogba used the opportunity to address aspiring footballers, stressing the importance of education alongside sporting ambition. He explained that discipline, values, and academic grounding were crucial to his own journey, especially at a time when football was not widely viewed as a reliable career path.

The former striker also pointed to the broader economic value of sports, highlighting the range of opportunities within the industry, from coaching and administration to stadium operations. His message reinforced the idea that football development extends beyond players on the pitch.

Tanzania’s role as a co-host for AFCON 2027 is expected to bring significant attention to the region, with the tournament projected to reach over 400 million people across Africa. For the host nation, Drogba’s involvement represents both a symbolic and practical boost as preparations continue.

With planning accelerating, attention will now shift to how Tanzania leverages global expertise to deliver a successful tournament while leaving a lasting legacy for its football ecosystem.
