Arsenal began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
A stunning second-half goal from captain Martin Odegaard proved to be the difference as Mikel Arteta’s side claimed all three points in Italy.
The Gunners controlled large periods of the match and created several chances but struggled to convert their opportunities.
Despite the narrow scoreline, the Premier League side were the better team for most of the contest and deserved their victory against their opponent that found it difficult to make anything.
Arsenal started brightly and nearly took the lead in the opening half. Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Mikel Merino all tested the Napoli defense as the visitors enjoyed more possession and attacking momentum.
Merino came closest during the first half when his header from close range was saved by Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret who was in good shape for the match.
Saka also missed a golden opportunity late in the half after being played through on goal by Odegaard. It could have easily been the opener, but the Englishman just couldn’t make it happen.
The home side had a few dangerous moments on the counterattack through Rasmus Hojlund and De Bruyne, but gunners backline remained organized and prevented the Italian side from creating clear-cut chances.
The first half ended goalless, with the Premier League Champions left frustrated by their wasteful finishing. The second half followed a similar pattern as the Gunners continued to push forward in search of the breakthrough.
Napoli defended deep and looked to catch the visitors on the break, while Arteta’s men patiently moved the ball around the pitch looking for an opening.
The decisive moment finally arrived in the 75th minute. Mikel Arteta’s side worked the ball neatly down the right side through Ben White and Christos Tzolis.
The Greek winger delivered a clever cut-back into the path of Martin Odegaard, who produced a brilliant finish. The Arsenal captain struck a powerful shot across goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic and into the net via the post to give the Premier League side a deserved 1-0 lead.
Tzolis was credited with the assist for the winning goal. After taking the lead, the London club continued to create opportunities and nearly doubled their advantage in the closing stages.
Kai Havertz thought he had scored a second goal after following up a rebound from Tzolis’ effort, but the strike was ruled out for offside.
Despite the disappointment, the away side remained comfortable and successfully managed the final minutes of the match.
The home team pushed forward late on and came close to equalizing when Kevin De Bruyne found space inside the penalty area. However, goalkeeper David Raya and his defense stood firm to protect their lead before it ended 0-1.
The visitors limited the host to very few meaningful chances throughout the second half, showing another strong defensive performance under Arteta against a good team.
The victory gives the London club an excellent start to their Champions League campaign and continues their strong form across all competitions.
Odegaard once again showed his importance to the team, producing the moment of quality needed to unlock a stubborn Napoli defense.
Meanwhile, Napoli were left disappointed after suffering another defeat and will need to improve quickly as their season continues.
Arsenal will count this match as another good outing for them after recently coming off a 2-1 victory against Chelsea during the weekend in the Premier League.
