Liverpool Football Club have officially retired the number 20 shirt in memory of Diogo Jota, following the tragic passing of the Portuguese forward and his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain on July 3, MySportDab Reports.
The historic move, a first in the club’s 133-year history, applies across all levels — including the men’s and women’s first teams, as well as the academy. The club reached the decision after consulting Jota’s wife, Rute, and other close family members.
“As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way,” said Michael Edwards, CEO of Football for FSG. “It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention.”
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and quickly endeared himself to fans with his tireless work rate, sharp finishing, and infectious personality.
Over five seasons, he made 182 appearances, scored 65 goals, and registered 26 assists. During his time at Anfield, he helped the club win two Premier League titles, two EFL Cups, and one FA Cup.
Liverpool’s statement described the tribute as a lasting gesture to honour “not only the immeasurable contribution our lad from Portugal made to the Reds’ on-pitch successes, but also the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues, and supporters.”
“As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20,” Edwards added.
The retired number 20 now stands as a permanent reminder of Jota’s legacy — a player whose presence transcended the game and left an enduring mark on Liverpool Football Club.
