South African football has been left in mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just weeks after he represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The talented midfielder, who played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches, was found dead at a property in Schotschekloof, Cape Town. Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, while authorities confirmed the cause has not yet been established.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, paid an emotional tribute to Adams, describing him as one of the country’s brightest football talents. He also urged the public and media to avoid speculation while Adams’ family and club, Mamelodi Sundowns, are given privacy during the difficult period.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino also expressed his condolences, calling the news “incredibly sad” and praising Adams for proudly representing South Africa on the world stage.
Adams featured against Mexico and Czechia before coming off the bench in the crucial victory over South Korea that secured Bafana Bafana’s place in the knockout rounds. South Africa’s memorable World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 32 following a narrow defeat to Canada.
The South African Football Players Union described Adams’ passing as an immeasurable loss to the nation’s football community, saying the gifted midfielder still had so much more to offer the game.
A product of Stellenbosch FC’s academy, Adams spent five years with the club before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, where he quickly established himself as one of the country’s leading midfielders.

His performances at the World Cup further enhanced his reputation, with many believing he was destined to become a key figure for both club and country for years to come.
Investigations into the circumstances of his death are ongoing, while tributes continue to pour in from across the football world for a player whose life and promising career ended far too soon.
