Brentford 3-0 Tottenham: Spurs Suffer Horror Show In Season Opener

by Ifeanyichukwu Chris Akashili

Brentford made a dream start to their Premier League campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over Tottenham who invested heavily during the summer transfer window.

The Bees were the better side from start to finish and punished a Spurs team that struggled to find rhythm despite several new faces in the squad. It was a horror show for Roberto de Zerbi all through the 90 minutes.

The home side wasted little time in taking control of the match despite what was expected of Spurs. Brentford’s energy and pressing caused problems for Tottenham throughout the opening stages, and their pressure paid off in the 12th minute.

Keane Lewis-Potter finished from close range after a fine attacking move, giving the Bees a deserved lead. The goal lifted the home crowd and set the tone for the rest of the encounter which was perfect.

The Spurs struggled to respond and looked uncomfortable whenever the home side pushed forward. The visitors were often caught in possession and failed to create clear chances in attack for themselves.

The home side nearly doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark when Igor Thiago hit the woodwork, showing just how dangerous the hosts were going forward.

The second goal arrived in the 33rd minute and came from another Tottenham mistake. Mathias Jensen’s effort from distance was not properly handled by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, allowing Vitaly Janelt to react quickest and score from the rebound.

Brentford’s players celebrated while Tottenham looked shocked by another defensive error. At 2-0, the home side were fully in control and deservedly ahead as play carried on between both teams.

Roberto De Zerbi made changes at halftime in an attempt to turn the game around, but the home side quickly ended any hopes of a comeback. Just three minutes into the second half, Michael Kayode made it 3-0.

After the Bees won a corner, a powerful effort was saved by Kinsky, but the rebound fell kindly for Kayode, who fired home from close range. The goal effectively sealed the result with more than 40 minutes still left to play.

One of the standout performers was new signing Mamadou Sangare. The midfielder enjoyed a superb debut and was involved in much of Brentford’s best football.

His energy, passing and ability to win the ball back helped the Bees dominate the midfield battle. He also contributed two assists and was widely praised as one of the best players on the pitch.

Unfortunately at the expenses of Tottenham, Brentford claimed a 3-0 victory which gave them massive three points to share the number one position with Arsenal after first game played.

For Tottenham, there were very few positives despite fielding several summer signings and debutants, the team looked disjointed and lacked chemistry.

Defensive mistakes, poor decision-making and a lack of attacking threat made it a difficult afternoon for De Zerbi’s side. Spurs rarely troubled Brentford’s defence and never looked capable of mounting a comeback.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 3-0 victory for the bees, who produced one of the standout performances of the opening weekend. Their organization, intensity and clinical finishing were too much for Tottenham to handle.

While Brentford can look forward to the rest of the season with confidence, Tottenham will know they have plenty of work to do after a disappointing start to their Premier League campaign.
