Chelsea reach full agreement to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix who already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract with the World Champions.

The Blues are expected to pay around £52 million for the French centre-back, who is set to undergo a medical before completing a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

Reports indicate that the defender will sign a six-year deal, reinforcing Chelsea’s long-term defensive plans under new manager, Xabi Alonso ahead of the new season.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal saying: “Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea, here we go. Agreement in place with official bid accepted by Crystal Palace.

“Broad terms in place last night and medical ongoing in London for the CB.

“£52m transfer fee. Axel Disasi not included in the deal. Lacroix signs until June 2032.”

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders since arriving at Crystal Palace from VfL Wolfsburg in 2024.

His impressive performances helped Palace enjoy one of the most successful periods in the club’s history, including lifting the FA Cup and earning European success.

His commanding displays, pace, and ability to play in a high defensive line quickly attracted interest from several top clubs, with Chelsea eventually winning the race for his signature.

Chelsea have prioritized strengthening their backline this summer as Alonso reshapes the squad ahead of the new campaign. The club believes Lacroix possesses the qualities needed to thrive in modern football.

His recovery speed, aerial dominance, composure on the ball, and leadership make him an ideal fit for Chelsea’s tactical approach. Negotiations between both parties reportedly progressed steadily over recent weeks.

Palace initially demanded a higher fee but eventually moved closer to Chelsea’s valuation, allowing both clubs to finalize the transfer. The Eagles have already begun working on signing a replacement.

Lacroix brings valuable Premier League experience despite spending only two seasons in England. Before joining Crystal Palace, he developed into one of Germany’s top defenders during his spell with Wolfsburg.

He established himself as a solid defender who gained recognition for his athleticism and defensive intelligence. His experience in both the Bundesliga and Premier League gives the Blues a proven defender capable of making an immediate impact.

The signing could also trigger several departures from Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso currently have numerous central defenders in the squad, and reports suggest players such asDisasi, Badiashile, and Trevoh Chalobah could leave before the transfer window closes as the club balances its squad.

It won’t be an easy loss for Crystal Palace as they were keen on keeping Lacroix, but the substantial transfer fee provides the club with the resources to reinvest in new defensive options.

Palace have reportedly identified potential replacements and are moving quickly to avoid leaving a gap in their squad before the new Premier League season begins.

Chelsea supporters will hope Lacroix can add greater defensive stability after inconsistent performances at the back in recent seasons. His experience makes him one of the standout defensive additions of the transfer window.

If the medical proceeds as expected, Maxence Lacroix will soon become newest signing at Stamford Bridge, marking another significant step in the club’s rebuilding project.

The French defender is one among many experience players alongside Morgan Rogers who recently completed his move this summer. Xabi Alonso and the other Blues squad are already out of London for their pre-season tour.
