Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has boldly claimed that no generation of Nigerian footballers has surpassed the legendary 1994 squad in terms of achievements and impact, MySportDab Reports.
The 50-year-old, who featured prominently for Nigeria between 1993 and 2002, made the statement via his X (formerly Twitter) page, responding to a growing debate comparing different eras of the national team.
Oliseh, who played 55 competitive matches and scored four goals for the Super Eagles, was part of the golden generation that lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and reached the round of 16 in Nigeria’s debut FIFA World Cup appearance the same year, under Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof.
The squad boasted iconic names such as Rashidi Yekini, Jay Jay Okocha, Finidi George, Daniel Amokachi, and Peter Rufai—players who left a lasting legacy both domestically and on the international stage.
Reacting to the social media debate comparing the 1994 squad with other generations, particularly the 1980 AFCON-winning side, Oliseh emphasized that achievements should be the primary metric for comparison.
“Well, you can easily rate the teams and players by what they achieved both at the club side and the national team levels. With all due respect, no team, collectively or individually, to date has come close to what the 1994 team players achieved for club and country. Sorry,” Oliseh posted.
Many members of the 1994 team also went on to claim Olympic gold for Nigeria at the 1996 Atlanta Games, further solidifying their legendary status.
Oliseh, who played for top European clubs like Ajax and Juventus, remains a respected voice in Nigerian football and continues to champion the legacy of his generation.
