Manchester United took a significant step toward securing their place in next season’s Champions League with a gritty 2-1 victory over Brentford.
Interim manager Michael Carrick guided his side to a result that leaves them needing just two points from their final four games to confirm a top-four finish.
United started with intent, nearly finding the net within two minutes when Kobbie Mainoo’s sensational solo run set up Amad Diallo, only for a goal-line block to deny the Ivorian.

The pressure eventually told in the 11th minute. Following a Bruno Fernandes corner, Harry Maguire rose highest at the back post to nod the ball back across the face of the goal.
Casemiro showed sharp instincts to crane his neck and power a header past Caoimhin Kelleher, marking his ninth Premier League goal of an increasingly prolific campaign.
Despite the lead, Brentford remained a constant threat. Igor Thiago was particularly wasteful, missing three high-quality opportunities, including a miscued effort at the far post that left the Bees wondering how they weren’t level.
The momentum swung firmly in United’s favor just before the break. In the 43rd minute, a swift counter-attack orchestrated by Bruno Fernandes carved open the Brentford defense.
Fernandes, showing his trademark vision, slid a perfectly weighted pass to Benjamin Sesko, who coolly bypassed a sliding defender before slotting home.
The assist was Fernandes’s 19th of the season, moving him within just one of the all-time Premier League record shared by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
The goal provided a comfortable cushion for a Manchester United side that has often struggled for clinical finishing this term.
In a surprising move at halftime, Carrick substituted Amad Diallo for Noussair Mazraoui, shifting the formation to a more defensive back five.
The change invited Brentford pressure, and the visitors nearly capitalized when Dango Ouattara’s header struck the post in the 71st minute. The final minutes were far from comfortable.

In the 87th minute, Brentford finally found a breakthrough when Mathias Jensen unleashed a venomous long-range strike from 20 yards that whistled past Senne Lammens.
The goal set up a frantic grandstand finish, with United forced to defend a series of Michael Kayode long throws and desperate crosses.
However, there was nothing Brentford could do with the little they had left to play, which saw Manchester United claim all three points from a 2-1 victory after 90 minutes of action at Old Trafford.
The victory is a significant one for the club and Michael Carrick, who is under consideration to take over permanently at the end of the season.
Michael Carrick was full of praise for Bruno Fernandes, who is nearing an all-time Premier League assist record.
Carrick said: “We score in every match and he’s largely responsible for that. He could have made another assist and even scored himself.
The interim manager had something to say about the game in general, giving his players credit for doing a good job.
He added: “It was quite an open game at times. We started fantastically well.
“Credit to them, they are a good team and we knew they were a good team.
“They came into the game a little bit and were in a good place at halftime so we tweaked things second half.
“Towards the end they had a few opportunities but I thought the spirit, effort and togetherness of the players was fantastic.
“It’s the time of year when it’s a result business and we needed to take points.
Manchester United are in a good position to qualify for next season’s Champions League, as they sit comfortably in third place, with Liverpool and Aston Villa trailing behind them.
Michael Carrick has done well enough to earn the job permanently after cementing this victory against Brentford, which could go on to give them a return to Champions League football next season.
