Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted the club are taking a cautious, “day-by-day” approach with Cole Palmer after the forward suffered a setback with a recurring groin injury in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, MySportDab Reports.
Palmer, who only recently returned from a similar issue, was passed fit to start at Old Trafford but was withdrawn after feeling discomfort, particularly after goalkeeper Robert Sánchez’s early red card forced the Blues into tactical adjustments.
The 22-year-old had previously eased back into action as a substitute against Brentford before starting in the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.
Maresca stressed that Chelsea are prioritising Palmer’s long-term fitness rather than rushing him back. “We need to protect Cole for sure, 100%,” the Italian said. “It’s not only about him—because of the Club World Cup and a very busy schedule, we have to protect several players.
With Cole, it’s not black and white. Some days he feels better, other days worse. That’s why we need to manage it carefully.”
The Blues boss confirmed that surgery has not been discussed as an option, with decisions being made in collaboration with the club’s medical staff. Palmer’s absence would be a blow for Chelsea, given his growing influence since joining from Manchester City last summer.
Ironically, Chelsea’s only two wins this season have come when Palmer has not been involved, against West Ham United and Fulham.
In his appearances, the Blues have drawn with Crystal Palace, Brentford, and Bayern Munich, and lost to Manchester United.
While fans await clarity on a potential return date, Maresca’s cautious tone suggests Chelsea will prioritise Palmer’s recovery over short-term results, especially with a congested fixture list on the horizon.
