Atletico Madrid claimed a 2-0 victory over Manchester United Champions League clash which gave them maximum three points on their home-ground.
Pablo Barrios gave the Spanish side an early lead, while a second-half red card for Leny Yoro made the Premier League club task even harder.
The host took advantage to secure all three points at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano after 90 minutes of action which saw them dominated play more than their opponent.

Atlético Madrid made a perfect start when Pablo Barrios scored under the first minute. Lee Kang-in started the move with a pass to Álex Baena, who found space on the left and sent the ball across the penalty area.
Barrios arrived at the right time and fired a shot that went past Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, with Ayden Heaven unable to stop it. His goal made the scoreline 1-0 as play continued.
The early goal gave the La Liga team confidence, and they continued to attack. However, the Premier League team had chances to get back into the match at some point.
Bryan Mbeumo missed an early opportunity after creating space for himself on the right, sending his effort wide instead of making more from it to help his side.
He later had another chance following a move involving Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, but goalkeeper Jan Oblak made the save. Baleba also headed the ball towards Oblak from the resulting corner.
The host nearly scored again when Álex Grimaldo struck a free-kick against the crossbar. Johnny Cardoso then found the net shortly before half-time, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review found that Marcos Llorente had handled the ball during the build-up.
The host went into the break with a 1-0 lead knowing the job wasn’t done for them. The second half action was loud from both teams who wanted to make things go their way.
Manchester United tried to respond after the break, but their opponent remained dangerous. Julian Alvarez came close to scoring when he volleyed a pass from Barrios against the post.
United captain Bruno Fernandes then missed a chance to equalise which could have saved them. Tielemans played a good pass to him near the edge of the penalty area, but Fernandes lifted his effort past Oblak and narrowly wide of the post.
The Portuguese midfielder later hit the crossbar with another attempt after United took a short corner. Despite these chances, the visitors could not find the goal they needed to crawl back into the match.
Manchester United’s hopes suffered another setback in the second half when defender Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute. Jonathan David ran towards goal, and Yoro challenged him as they chased the ball.
The referee initially allowed play to continue, but VAR recommended a review. After checking the incident, referee Glenn Nyberg showed Yoro a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The decision was debated because some observers felt the challenge was harsh and shouldn’t have resulted to a red. However, United had to carry on with the match with ten players.
The host took advantage of their numerical advantage five minutes later. In the 79th minute, Grimaldo sent a pass into the penalty area for David, whose shot was saved by Lammens.

Ademola Lookman reacted quickly and scored from the rebound to make it 2-0. The second goal ended Manchester United’s hopes of rescuing a point in the encounter.
The host managed the closing stages well, while the visitors struggled to create another clear chance. The match finished with Atletico Madrid claiming a 2-0 victory against Manchester United.
The match also saw disciplinary action against both sides. Atletico manager Diego Simeone received a yellow card in the 37th minute for waving an imaginary card towards the officials.
Marcus Rashford was booked for United in the 52nd minute, while defender Robin Le Normand received a yellow card in the 88th minute. Yoro’s dismissal was the only red card reported all through the match between both teams.
The result gave Atletico Madrid a valuable Champions League win and left Manchester United with more questions to answer about their form under Michael Carrick this season despite how they ended the 2025/26 season finishing top four.
