Jalen Brunson delivered one of the greatest performances in New York Knicks history, scoring 45 points to lead his team to a dramatic 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 and secure the franchise’s first NBA championship in 53 years.

With the Knicks struggling offensively for large parts of the contest, Brunson carried the team on his shoulders, producing a sensational second-half display to complete a memorable Finals triumph at Madison Square Garden.

The All-Star guard finished with 45 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals while shooting 14-of-27 from the field. His performance set a new franchise record for the most points scored by a Knicks player in an NBA Finals game and earned him the Finals MVP award.

New York looked destined for a difficult night after managing just 13 points in the opening quarter. The Spurs dominated defensively early on, with Victor Wembanyama recording three blocks in the first four minutes and helping his side build an early 18-8 advantage.

Brunson kept the Knicks alive during a sloppy first half, scoring 16 points before the break as New York cut the deficit to just three points despite shooting poorly and committing several turnovers.

San Antonio appeared in control entering the fourth quarter, leading 72-65 behind strong performances from Wembanyama and rookie Dylan Harper, who scored a career-high 25 points off the bench.

However, Brunson produced a championship-winning response. He scored 14 points in the third quarter and added another 10 in the fourth, repeatedly delivering in clutch moments as the Knicks erased their deficit.

His three free throws with under four minutes remaining gave New York its first lead since the opening minutes, before another crucial basket restored the advantage after Harper had tied the game.

The Spurs had opportunities late on, but New York held firm to seal a historic victory and end a championship drought stretching back to 1973.

For the Knicks, the triumph marks the end of decades of disappointment and the beginning of a new era led by Brunson, whose name is now firmly etched into franchise history. After years of near misses and rebuilding projects, the Larry O’Brien Trophy has finally returned to New York.
