Atletico Madrid and Arsenal played out a gritty 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, in a match which had VAR controversy.

The encounter was defined by tactical discipline and clinical finishes from the penalty spot, both sides left the pitch knowing the tie is far from over.

However, Mikel Arteta will likely be the happier manager heading back to London knowing they will play the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.

The atmosphere in Madrid was electric, but the opening exchanges reflected the immense pressure of a semi-final which saw no goal happening.

Diego Simeone set up a resilient defensive block that initially frustrated Arsenal’s fluid attacking movements all through the encounter.

For the first half-hour, the Gunners struggled to find space between the lines, with Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice forced to play safe lateral passes against a compact Atletico midfield led by the ever-reliable Koke.

However, as the first half drew to a close, the game sparked into life. Arsenal began to find their rhythm, utilizing the pace of Gabriel Martinelli and the power of Viktor Gyökeres.

The breakthrough came in the 44th minute when Gyökeres was brought down in the box. The Swedish striker stepped up himself, coolly slotting the penalty past Jan Oblak to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead just before the interval.

It was his 19th goal of a remarkable debut season in North London, silencing the home crowd. The second half saw a reinvigorated Atlético Madrid as they pressed nonestop before getting themselves back into the game.

Simeone’s side emerged from the tunnel with higher intensity, pressing Arsenal’s backline and forcing errors. The persistence paid off in the 56th minute.

After a period of sustained pressure, the referee pointed to the spot for the second time of the night following a foul in the Arsenal area.

Julián Álvarez, who has been instrumental for Atletico side throughout this tournament, maintained his composure to fire home the equalizer in the 56th minute.

At 1-1, the game opened up significantly. Arsenal introduced Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka to inject fresh energy into their attack, while Atletico turned to Alex Baena and Alexander Sørloth to find a winner.

In the 78th minute, Arsenal thought they had a chance to reclaim the lead when the referee awarded a third penalty of the match after Eze went down under a challenge from Dávid Hancko.

However, after a lengthy VAR review and a trip to the pitchside monitor, the decision was overturned.

The officials ruled that the contact was insufficient, a decision that left Mikel Arteta fuming on the touchline and the home fans breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Atletico Madrid and Arsenal could not make anything happen as the game came to a conclusion with a 1-1 result after 90 minutes as both teams will wait for the second leg in England.

The result leaves the tie perfectly balanced. While Atlético Madrid showed they have the grit to fight back despite knowing they failed to make use of their home advantage.

For Arsenal, all the advantage will be in their favor after getting a vital goal which will boost their moral to get more and qualify for the final at the Emirates Stadium.

The two teams will meet again for the second leg at the Emirates Stadium on May 5, 2026. With a place in the Budapest final on the line, Arsenal will look to their home support to carry them through.

Meanwhile, Simeone will undoubtedly be plotting another masterclass in European knockout football which they will be needing by all means possible.
