Barcelona have extended the lead at the top of the La Liga table following a narrow 1-0 win over Mallorca tonight, MySportDab reports.
With five matches left in the season, Hansi Flick’s Blaugrana are closing in on winning the race for the La Liga title this season, thanks to a late run of impressive results in the Spanish top flight.
Against Mallorca tonight, it wasn’t expected to be an easy tie, especially with their top scorer this season Robert Lewandowski sidelined due to injury.
However, the Catalan giants made light of Lewandowski’s absence with a formidable showing enough to secure all three points in the bag.
Mallorca proved a tough nut to crack in the first half. The visitors settled for a low block while hoping to catch their hosts off balance in counterattack.
With their largely defensive play, they succeeded in taming Barcelona, forcing them to a goalless draw in the first half.
However, the league leaders couldn’t wait to break the deadlock in the second 45. Just a minute into the second half, Dani Olmo, latching on an assist from Garcia, fired the hosts into the lead with a brilliant strike.
And the goal made all the difference in the game. Mallorca did little to mount a comeback while Barcelona continued on their dominant performance despite the lead.
The match ended with the home side securing a narrow 1-0 win to bag all three points and boost their chances of winning the Spanish top flight this season.
Following the win, they have opened a seven-point gap at the top of the table, but have played one game more than challengers and defending champions Real Madrid.
