Booker T

Booker T built one of the most decorated careers in professional wrestling history out of genuinely difficult circumstances, losing both parents before he reached his teenage years, serving prison time as a young adult, and becoming a father before he turned 18, all before a $4,000 wrestling school fee, paid by his boss at a storage company, changed the entire direction of his life.

He went on to hold 35 championships across WCW, WWE and TNA, became one of only four performers ever inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, and remains one of the most respected figures in wrestling both for his in-ring career and his work training the next generation through his own promotion.

Booker T Biography

Booker T

He was born Robert Booker Tio Huffman Jr. on March 1, 1965, in Plain Dealing, Bossier Parish, Louisiana, the youngest of his mother’s eight children.

His father died when Booker was just 10 months old. Following that loss, the family relocated from Louisiana to Houston, Texas, where Booker was raised primarily by his mother until her own death when he was 13, leaving him orphaned in his early teens.

Booker T became a father himself before turning 18, and by his early twenties had served a 19-month prison sentence following a string of robberies, a period of his life he has spoken about openly in later interviews as part of the honest arc of his story rather than something to hide.

His older brother, Lash Huffman, known in wrestling as Stevie Ray, encouraged Booker in 1989 to attend a wrestling school in Houston run by bodybuilder and wrestler Ivan Putski. Booker wanted to attend but couldn’t afford the required 4,000 dollar tuition.

His boss at the storage company where he worked as a single father heard about the situation and covered the cost himself, a decision that directly launched Booker’s wrestling career.

Career

Booker T Career

Booker T made his professional wrestling debut around 1989 to 1990 for the Western Wrestling Alliance under the ring name G.I. Bro.

When that promotion folded, he and Stevie Ray continued working the Texas independent circuit before joining Texas All-Pro Wrestling and later Dallas’s Global Wrestling Federation, where the brothers formed a tag team called the Ebony Experience, debuting on May 4, 1992.

Audiences at some of their early matches subjected the brothers to open racist abuse.

Still, Booker began winning fans over through his athleticism and his breakdance-inspired offensive style, a signature that would carry into his later, more famous work.

WCW Career and Harlem Heat

Booker and Stevie Ray signed with World Championship Wrestling in 1993, where they were rebranded as Harlem Heat, one of the most dominant tag teams of the 1990s.

The team won the WCW World Tag Team Championship a record 11 times, 10 as Harlem Heat with his brother and one more later in the WWF alongside Test, the most tag team title reigns of any team in WCW history.

Booker separately won the WCW World Television Championship a record six times, becoming the first African American wrestler to hold that title.

As a singles competitor, he won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship five times and the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship six times.

When WCW folded in 2000, Booker was its final World Heavyweight Champion and final United States Heavyweight Champion, closing out the promotion’s championship history.

He became the ninth wrestler in history to complete the WCW Triple Crown, and remains one of only five men to have completed both the WCW and WWE Triple Crowns across their careers.

WWE Career

Booker joined WWE in 2001 after the company purchased WCW’s assets. With his fifth WCW World Championship win, which occurred after the purchase while he was technically competing under the WWF/E banner, Booker became just the second African American wrestler to win a world championship in WWF/E history, following The Rock, and the first of non-mixed race to do so.

He went on to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship once, giving him six total world championships across his career, and won the King of the Ring tournament in 2006.

Across WCW, WWE and TNA combined, Booker held 35 championships over the course of his career and, according to Cagematch.net records, wrestled a total of 1,718 professional matches.

Fellow wrestling legend Kurt Angle has praised Booker’s overall career directly, saying he’s done it all and legitimately belongs among the top five wrestlers of all time.

Booker’s peers recognized his work through multiple Pro Wrestling Illustrated honors as well, including Most Improved Wrestler of the Year in 1998, Tag Team of the Year in 1999 alongside Stevie Ray as Harlem Heat, and Wrestler of the Year in 2000 after finishing ranked number one in that year’s PWI 500.

In a 2013 WWE fan poll, he was voted the greatest World Heavyweight Champion in company history.

Hall of Fame

Booker stepped back from full-time wrestling in 2012 and returned to WWE at the 2011 Royal Rumble in a new role as a broadcaster, going on to serve as SmackDown General Manager and later as a longtime color commentator across Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.

He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on April 6, 2013, as an individual performer, inducted by his brother Stevie Ray.

He was inducted a second time on April 6, 2019, this time alongside Stevie Ray as part of Harlem Heat, making Booker one of only four wrestlers in history to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, joining an exclusive group that includes Ric Flair, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels.

He made a final in-ring return at the 2023 Royal Rumble before formally retiring from active competition that year.

However, he has continued working in broadcasting and remains involved in wrestling in various capacities.

Beyond his in-ring and broadcasting careers, Booker founded and owns Reality of Wrestling, an independent wrestling promotion and training school based in Texas City, Texas.

Through it, he trains aspiring wrestlers directly, passing on the technical and performance skills he built over more than three decades in the business, and the promotion has become one of the more respected independent training grounds in American professional wrestling.

Booker T Wife

Booker T Wife

Booker T has been married twice. He first married Levestia Huffman in 1996; the two divorced in 2001.

He married Sharmell Sullivan, a former Miss Black America titleholder and professional wrestler in her own right who competed as a two-time WWE Diva, in 2005.

The two have twins, born in 2010: a son named Kendrick and a daughter named Kennedy. Booker has three children in total.

Booker T Net Worth

Booker T Net Worth

Booker T’s net worth is estimated at $6 million. His reported annual income is $500,000, built from his decades-long wrestling career, his broadcasting work with WWE, his ownership of Reality of Wrestling, and various acting and promotional appearances.
