In 2026, Giannina became a central figure in ongoing criminal proceedings in Argentina, testifying in the negligence trial of the medical team accused of failing her father in the weeks before his death in November 2020.

Her testimony brought her back into the international spotlight, well beyond her earlier public profile as Agüero’s wife and Diego Maradona’s daughter.

Giannina Maradona Biography

Giannina Maradona

She was born on May 16, 1989, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Diego Maradona and Claudia Villafañe.

Giannina Dinorah Maradona is the younger of the couple’s two daughters, following her older sister, actress Dalma Maradona, who was born two years earlier.

Diego and Claudia’s marriage ended in divorce in the early 2000s following years of public struggles related to Diego’s substance addiction and reported infidelity.

Both daughters have said publicly that their parents remained on friendly terms after the split. Giannina also has several half-siblings from her father’s other relationships.

This subject has been the focus of extensive public attention and legal disputes in Argentina over the years, including paternity claims made both during and after Diego’s lifetime.

Given the complexity and contested nature of these claims, specific names and details beyond what Diego and his estate have formally acknowledged should be treated with caution.

Career

Giannina Maradona has built a career as an accessory and jewelry designer, working with the Argentine online retailer DelaPaz, where she designs and sells jewelry.

She also runs her own small textile and accessories business, which she regularly promotes through her social media accounts.

She has built a significant following on Instagram, with more than one million followers, where she shares glimpses of her personal life, her son, and her design work.

Beyond her design career, Giannina has made television appearances in Argentina over the years, including a guest appearance on La Noche del 10, her father’s television program, named after his famous No. 10 jersey.

She has generally maintained a private approach to her personal life relative to her level of public recognition, choosing not to share extensive details about her relationships or day-to-day life beyond her business.

Sergio Aguero

Ex-Husband Aguero

Giannina Maradona married footballer Sergio Agüero in 2008 in a ceremony in Madrid attended primarily by close family and friends.

The couple welcomed a son together, Benjamín Agüero Maradona, on February 19, 2009. He became Diego Maradona’s first grandchild.

Giannina and Sergio divorced in 2012 after four years of marriage, with reports at the time citing infidelity as a factor in the split.

Sergio Agüero went on to become one of the Premier League’s most prolific goalscorers during his lengthy career with Manchester City.

Benjamín has since grown into a public figure in his own right, building a following on social media and maintaining relationships with both of his famous parents.

Diego Maradona’s Daughter

In 2015, Diego Maradona publicly accused his ex-wife, Claudia Villafañe, of embezzling approximately $9 million from him between 2000 and 2015, alleging that she used the funds to purchase multiple properties in Miami, Florida.

The dispute became a prolonged legal battle in Argentine and Uruguayan courts. During related hearings in 2017, Diego went further and accused Giannina directly of being complicit in the alleged scheme, publicly calling for her to face consequences.

Giannina responded emotionally to her father’s accusations, saying she had forgiven him for far more serious matters in the past and would continue to do so. Both Gianinna and her sister, Dalma, stood by their mother throughout the legal dispute.

The case reflected a broader pattern of public and often painful conflict within the Maradona family that continued for years, even as Diego and his daughters maintained a relationship.

Testimony in Her Father’s Death Trial

Diego Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, roughly two weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a brain blood clot.

He had been recovering at a rented home in Tigre, Buenos Aires Province, rather than in a hospital or clinical setting, a decision that later became the central legal issue in a long-running criminal case in Argentina.

Seven members of Diego’s medical team, including a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, and a nurse, faced trial on charges of gross negligence, accused of failing to provide adequate care in the weeks leading up to his death.

If convicted of homicide with possible intent, meaning prosecutors argue they pursued a course of action despite knowing it could lead to death, the defendants face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.

The defense has argued that Maradona, who battled cocaine and alcohol addiction for years, died of natural causes unrelated to any failure of care.

In April 2026, Giannina testified for more than 90 minutes during the retrial of the case after an earlier trial was declared void in 2025 following the resignation of one of the presiding judges.

She told the court that she and her siblings had been the victims of what she described as “total and horrible manipulation” by the medical team, whom she said had convinced the family that Diego could safely recover at home rather than in a hospital or psychiatric facility.

She described the emotional experience of racing to her father’s bedside on the day of his death, only to be told by emergency responders that nothing could be done to save him.

In comments made in the months following her testimony, Giannina also pointed to Diego’s former lawyer and representative, Matías Morla, and his former assistant, alleging that the plan for her father’s care had, in her words, “gone out of control.”

She suggested that it had not suited certain people around her father for him to be hospitalized in a psychiatric facility, where his addiction could have been treated but where he might also have been placed under a judge’s guardianship.

Morla and his associate are separately facing trial on unrelated allegations involving the fraudulent management of Maradona’s commercial brands.

However, a date for those proceedings had not been announced as of mid-2026.
