Kerry Von Erich

Kerry Von Erich was an American professional wrestler and one of the most accomplished members of the legendary Von Erich wrestling family of Texas.

Wrestling under names including “The Modern Day Warrior” and, most famously, “The Texas Tornado,” Kerry became WWF Intercontinental Champion in 1990, an achievement made even more remarkable by the fact that he competed for years with a prosthetic foot following a 1986 motorcycle accident, a detail he kept largely private from fans and even some opponents.

Kerry died by suicide in 1993 at the age of 33, one of several tragedies that struck his family and later inspired the 2023 A24 film The Iron Claw.

Kerry Von Erich Biography

Kerry Von Erich

He was born on February 3, 1960. Kerry Von Erich was one of six sons born to Jack Barton “Fritz” Adkisson, who wrestled professionally under the name Fritz Von Erich and popularized the Iron Claw wrestling hold, and his wife, Doris Adkisson.

The Von Erich brothers, in birth order, were Jack Jr., Kevin, David, Kerry, Mike, and Chris. The family experienced its first tragedy early on. Jack Jr., the eldest brother, died at about six years old after being accidentally electrocuted by a live electrical wire near the trailer park where the family lived in Niagara Falls, New York.

The family later settled in Texas, where Fritz built one of the most successful regional wrestling promotions in the country.

Kerry was a standout high school athlete in track and field. At the University of Houston, he set a Southwest Conference discus record, breaking a mark previously held by his father.

He trained with hopes of competing in the discus at the 1980 Summer Olympics, but those plans ended after the United States boycotted the Moscow Games.

This pivotal moment redirected his focus entirely to professional wrestling.

Career

Kerry Career

Kerry Von Erich made his professional wrestling debut on May 7, 1979, for his father’s promotion, then known as Big Time Wrestling and later rebranded as World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW).

He competed alongside his brothers Kevin and David, feuding with opponents including The Fabulous Freebirds throughout the early 1980s.

Kerry’s most famous early championship victory came on May 6, 1984, when he defeated Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

The victory came shortly after the death of his brother David, who had died suddenly from acute enteritis while wrestling in Tokyo, Japan, earlier that year.

Kerry’s title win was widely regarded as an emotional tribute to David, although he lost the championship back to Flair just 18 days later.

In June 1986, Kerry suffered a serious motorcycle accident that left him with a dislocated hip and severe fractures to his leg and ankle.

Despite efforts to save the limb, the injuries ultimately required the amputation of his right foot.

Remarkably, Kerry returned to the ring with a prosthetic foot and kept the amputation secret from much of the wrestling world for years.

The secret became public during an AWA match in Las Vegas, when his boot and prosthetic foot reportedly slipped off during a match against Col. DeBeers.

Kerry went on to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam 1990, defeating Mr. Perfect while wrestling under the ring name The Texas Tornado.

He became the only Von Erich brother to win a championship in what is now WWE.

During his career, Kerry also held the NWA American Heavyweight Championship, multiple World Class and NWA Tag Team Championships, and several regional titles in promotions including the USWA and the Global Wrestling Federation.

In 2009, Kerry, alongside his father and brothers, was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Personal Struggles

Kerry developed a dependency on opioid painkillers during his recovery from his motorcycle accident and subsequent amputation, a struggle that continued for years. He was arrested on drug possession charges in Dallas in 1983, although those charges were ultimately dismissed.

In February 1992, he was arrested on charges of prescription forgery and placed on 10 years’ probation, a development that led to his release from the WWF.

While still on probation, he was arrested again in February 1993 on a cocaine possession charge, a probation violation that placed him at serious risk of receiving a prison sentence.

Kerry married Catherine on June 18, 1983, and the couple had two daughters, Hollie and Lacey, before divorcing in April 1992.

The Von Erich Family Legacy and The Iron Claw

The Von Erich family’s story, marked by extraordinary wrestling success and repeated personal tragedy, became the subject of the 2023 A24 biographical film The Iron Claw, directed by Sean Durkin.

The film starred Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, and Maura Tierney as Doris Von Erich.

The film brought renewed public attention to the family’s story decades after the events it portrays. However, surviving family members, including Kevin Von Erich, have publicly noted that certain events and characters were dramatized or altered for the screen.

Kevin, who has remained active in wrestling communities across North Texas, was involved in the film’s development, and his sons, Ross and Marshall Von Erich, have continued the family’s wrestling legacy as a successful tag team.
