Arsenal came up short again after a defeat 2-3 against Borussia Dortmund while they continue to struggle without some key players who are still on holiday after the World Cup.
It was another bad result for Mikel Arteta and his side as they could not get a winner in another preseason match which saw them also lost their Emirates Cup title.
The match was supposed to be the one the Gunners use to bounce back and put all the outside talks to rest concerning their Premier League dominance last season.
It was Borussia Dortmund who drew first blood after a stunning goal in the 7th minute, through Inacio. Arsenal were stunned with the opener after seeing themselves unable to get control of the game.
The match continued with some wonderful and well organized play from both ends, while the Premier League side tried adjusted to match up with the tempo of their German opponent.
Dortmund doubled their lead with another goal in the 29th minute through Karetsas. It was a great finish from the Bundesliga team who made sure they were 0-2 ahead.
While the play carried on, Gabriel Magalhães was shown a yellow card in the 45th minute before both teams headed inside for the break with the scoreline 0-2.
The second half was much better from the Premier League Champions who were more on edge and pushed back as their fans expected of them to do all through the first half.
Arsenal kept at it until they pulled a goal back in the 54th minute through Ethan Nwaneri. It was a clever finish from the Englishman who made sure he cut the lead to 1-2.
The game carried on with more action and opportunities before Dortmund scored again. This time, it was a beauty from Gadou in the 58th minute to make sure it became 1-3.
It became rough for the Gunners as their performance wasn’t catching up or good enough to make them get anything for themselves.
Nothing happened with the Premier League Champions still chasing the game which entered the one hour mark and the scoreline was still 1-3 between both teams.
Fortune finally smiled on the Gunners as they were awarded a penalty which saw Viktor Gyökeres stepped up and made it count in the 69th minute which made it 2-3.
Despite the goal, there was nothing that could be done for the London club as they were pushed back by their opponent who were not looking to lose their lead.
The match ended with Borussia Dortmund claiming a 2-3 victory against Arsenal, but both teams decided on taking penalties despite the final result. However, the German side were announced as the Emirates Cup winner.
It was the Gunners who ended up winning the penalty shootout thanks to Ethan Nwaneri who scored the last goal that decided it 5-4 between both teams.
Arsenal were able to redeem themselves by winning the penalty shootout after losing the 90 minutes encounter against Borussia Dortmund who won 2-3.
The match was entertaining with five goals being scored in the 90 minutes before they went for penalties which was more favorable to the Premier League Champions.
