Struggling Sunderland secured a valuable 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, thanks to a first-half penalty from Enzo Le Fee.

The Black Cats produced a determined performance to claim all three points against the Blues, with the visitors unable to find a way back into the game after falling behind.

The result gave the hosts an important league victory, while Xabi Alonso and his players suffered another disappointing afternoon away from home.

Chelsea started the game looking to take control, but Sunderland were ready to make things difficult for the visitors all through the 90 minutes.

The home side suffered an early setback when captain Granit Xhaka was forced off with an injury just a few minutes into the match. Jules Ahoka came on to replace him as play carried on between both teams.

Despite losing their captain, the host continued to compete and looked dangerous whenever they moved forward against their opponent in the encounter.

The World Champions also had opportunities to take the lead. Cole Palmer tested the goalkeeper Robin Roefs, but his effort was comfortably saved as things stayed goalless.

At the other end, Enzo Le Fee also came close to scoring after driving into the away side penalty area. However, goalkeeper Mike Penders was equal to his attempt.

The home supporters continued to encourage their team as they increased the pressure. Their efforts paid off in the 36th minute when the referee awarded them a penalty.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill was judged to have fouled Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey inside the penalty area. The decision proved controversial, but the referee pointed to the spot.

Enzo Le Fee stepped forward and calmly converted the penalty to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The host managed to protect their advantage and went into half-time with a one-goal lead.

Chelsea needed a response after the break, but the black cats remained determined to protect their advantage. It was a frustrating game for Xabi Alonso who was lost and confused.

The Blues struggled to turn their possession into clear scoring opportunities, while their opponent worked hard to keep their defensive shape.

The home side also looked to make use of counter-attacking opportunities whenever the visitors pushed forward in search of an equalizer which they kept failing to turn into a goal.

Chelsea continued searching for an equaliser, but Sunderland refused to give them much space around the penalty area which gradually became a fortress as the match carried on.

The visitors eventually ran out of time as the home supporters celebrated an important victory. The match finished with Sunderland claiming a 1-0 victory against Chelsea after 90 minutes.

The 1-0 victory represents an important result for the black cats as they look to improve their position in the Premier League after sitting bottom for a very long time.

Beating a team of Chelsea’s quality will also provide confidence for the players and supporters going into their next fixtures.

For Xabi Alonso, the defeat will be frustrating. They had opportunities to make an impact but failed to find the back of the net.

The Blues will now need to review their performance and work on improving their attacking play ahead of their next Premier League assignment.

In the end, Enzo Le Fee’s penalty proved to be the difference as Sunderland defeated Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light to claim all important three points after 90 minutes.
