Deniz Undav scored a brace which was enough to hand Germany a 2-1 comeback victory against Ivory Coast at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.

This Group E clash, which carried significant weight for the progression to the Round of 32, delivered a rollercoaster of emotions for fans on both sides.

From the opening whistle, Germany sought to impose their authority. The four-time champions controlled much of the early possession against their opponent.

Kai Havertz was a constant threat, and Jamal Musiala’s creative spark kept the Ivorian defense on their toes all through the match.

Germany even saw two potential goals ruled out, which one after a controversial foul on the Ivorian goalkeeper and another for an aerial challenge leaving the German faithful frustrated as the scores remained level.

Ivory Coast, however, were anything but passive. Playing with a defiant energy that contrasted sharply with their underdog status, they caught the Germans off guard on the half-hour mark.

Yan Diomande orchestrated a brilliant attacking move down the left flank, delivering a low, dangerous cross into the box.

After a chaotic scramble involving Amad Diallo, the ball fell kindly to Franck Kessié, who steered it home to put the Elephants in the lead.

For the remainder of the first half and deep into the second, Ivory Coast demonstrated remarkable defensive discipline.

Ivory Coast commanding presence of their backline and inspired goalkeeping from Yahia Fofana, they repelled wave after wave of German pressure.

As the second half wore on, the heat in Toronto seemed to intensify the stakes, and Ivory Coast nearly doubled their lead in the 51st minute, only to see the opportunity squandered in a moment of hesitation.

Just as it seemed the Ivorians might hang on for a monumental upset, Germany’s persistence finally bore fruit.

In the 68th minute, a precise cross from the right wing found substitute Deniz Undav, who arrived at the perfect time to tap the ball into the net, leveling the score.

The match then devolved into a breathless affair, with momentum swinging wildly. Ivory Coast had a golden opportunity late in the game when Simon Adingra found himself with time and space in the box, but a lack of composure in the final strike allowed Germany to survive.

Then came the climax. With the clock ticking deep into the six minutes of stoppage time, Felix Nmecha delivered a surgical pass from outside the box to Undav.

The striker turned expertly and fired past a scrambling Fofana, sending the German supporters in the stands into a state of pure ecstasy.

With the final whistle, Germany celebrated a 2-1 victory that ensures their progression into the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It was a result that required every ounce of character from the side, proving that they have the grit necessary to compete deep into the 2026 tournament.

For Ivory Coast, while the result is a bitter pill to swallow after such a valiant display, they proved themselves a side capable of troubling the very best in the world.

As for Germany, the ghosts of past group-stage exits are finally behind them as they march on to the next phase with renewed confidence with one game left.
