Sergio Busquets, one of the most decorated midfielders in modern football, has confirmed he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of Inter Miami’s ongoing MLS season, MySportDab Reports.
The 37-year-old joined Miami in June 2023, linking up with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Together, they guided the Herons to the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. Now, with Miami firmly in the hunt for this year’s MLS Cup, Busquets is aiming to finish his glittering career on a high.
Busquets leaves behind a remarkable legacy forged at Barcelona, where he spent 16 years after breaking into the first team under Pep Guardiola in 2008.
The midfield anchor went on to make 722 appearances for the Blaugrana – the third-highest in club history – winning nine LaLiga titles, seven Copa del Rey crowns and three Champions League trophies. He also lifted the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup three times each.
Known for his intelligence, composure and positional sense, Busquets was the glue in Barcelona’s iconic midfield alongside Xavi and Andrés Iniesta. He featured in 48 El Clásico matches, more than any player for either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Internationally, he was just as influential, earning 143 caps for Spain while playing a central role in their golden era, which included the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012 triumphs.
Announcing his decision in an Instagram video, Busquets said: “It has been almost 20 years enjoying this incredible story that I always dreamed of. Thanks to FC Barcelona, the club of my life, and to the Spanish national team for unforgettable moments. And thanks to Inter Miami for allowing me to live a new experience and play my part.”
Miami still have five regular-season games remaining and sit just five points behind Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union with two matches in hand. Busquets’ departure will also free up a Designated Player slot, with reports suggesting the club is preparing to extend Messi’s contract by two years.
For Busquets, retirement closes a chapter defined by quiet brilliance, consistency, and an unrivalled trophy cabinet.
