Dayana Yastremska delivered the shock of the tournament on Tuesday as she ousted second seed Coco Gauff in the first round of Wimbledon with a stunning 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory on Court One, MySportDab Reports.
Gauff, fresh from her French Open triumph in June, was tipped to make a deep run at the All England Club but fell at the first hurdle in a surprisingly error-prone performance.
The American, who has never progressed beyond the fourth round in six visits to Wimbledon, committed nine double faults and 29 unforced errors while managing only six winners. It marks her earliest Grand Slam exit since last year’s first-round defeat at the same venue.
Yastremska, ranked 42nd in the world, powered through the match in just 78 minutes, extending her strong form on grass after reaching the Nottingham final and Eastbourne quarter-finals in June. Known as much for her tennis as her off-court modelling presence, the Ukrainian was vibrant in victory.
“I was really on fire—even my nails have fire on them,” Yastremska quipped post-match. “Playing Coco is special. These courts are made for the greatest players, so I’m very grateful.”
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic launched his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title with a four-set win over Frenchman Alexandre Muller, 6-1, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-2. The Serb started strongly but required medical intervention after a mid-match slump, later citing possible illness.
“I went from feeling my absolute best to my absolute worst in 45 minutes,” Djokovic said. “But the energy came back after some doctors’ miracle pills.”
The 38-year-old, tied on 24 majors with Margaret Court, is targeting an eighth Wimbledon crown to match Roger Federer and extend his legacy. Despite strong competition from Alcaraz and Sinner, Djokovic remains determined to make Centre Court his own once again.
