Real Madrid have made a shock move for Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, MySportDab reports.

Williams has been a standout performer for Athletic Bilbao since last season and has garnered interest from top clubs in Europe.

Real Madrid’s rival Barcelona headlined the race for the winger last summer following his stellar and remarkable club and international campaign.

This season, they have pulled out of the race and are exploring options for a potential Robert Lewandowski replacement.

Premier League side Arsenal were also in the race for the Spain international last season, but have bowed out this term.

Meanwhile, other European football juggernauts are in the race for Williams this summer, with Real Madrid headlining the race now.

According to a Spanish outlet, Marca, Real Madrid have made a shock move for Williams and are ready to trigger his €58million release clause.

The report adds that Los Blancos are hoping to strengthen their flanks by signing the prolific winger with Rodrygo, titling to leave the club this summer.

Williams scored five La Liga goals with 11 assists last season in 31 appearances and has racked up five goals plus five assists in 28 this season.

He also played an integral role in Athletic Bilbao’s run to the semifinals of the Europa League this season, scoring five goals plus two assists in 13 appearances.

The 22-year-old has two years left on his deal, but could leave should his suitors trigger his release clause. Real Madrid are reportedly hopeful of securing an agreement to make this move happen as they brace for Rodrygo’s exit.
