World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made a victorious return to the ATP Tour on Saturday, defeating Argentina’s Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome, MySportDab Reports.
The match marked Sinner’s first competitive appearance since winning the Australian Open in January and serving a suspension accepted from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Playing in front of more than 10,000 passionate fans at the Foro Italico, the 23-year-old Italian showed little rust as he dispatched world No. 99 Navone in straight sets. The win sets up a third-round clash with lucky loser Jesper de Jong.
Sinner was sidelined earlier this year after testing positive twice for traces of clostebol in March 2023. However, WADA accepted that the violation was due to accidental contamination from his physiotherapist, allowing Sinner to resume his career after serving a brief suspension.
“It’s an amazing feeling. It’s a special feeling,” Sinner said in his post-match interview. “I never take things for granted. I’m just happy to be back.”
Despite the long layoff and the emotional weight of returning on home soil, Sinner remained composed throughout, treating the Rome crowd to a solid, if unspectacular, performance.
He broke Navone once in each set and relied on consistent baseline play and superior movement to secure the win.
While Sinner was making his comeback, rival Carlos Alcaraz was spotted nearby at the Stadio Olimpico watching his football friend Patric in action for Lazio. The Spaniard is set to face Laslo Djere on Sunday night.
Sinner’s performance may not have matched the intensity of his French Open semi-final clash with Alcaraz last year, but it was a confident first step as he eyes another deep run on clay ahead of Roland Garros later this month.
