Arsenal continued their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to go top of the table.
The defending champions had to work for all three points against a well-organized Sunderland side, but key moments from David Raya, Bruno Guimaraes, and Bukayo Saka helped Mikel Arteta’s team secure another important win.
The first half was closely contested, with both teams creating limited clear-cut chances. The home side showed plenty of energy and confidence in front of their home fans, while the Gunners struggled to find their usual rhythm in possession.
Kai Havertz came close for the visitors, and Gabriel Magalhaes also tested the home side’s defense, but the game remained goalless at the break between both teams.
The home team looked dangerous on the counterattack and matched the Premier League side physically throughout the opening 45 minutes. The biggest turning point of the match arrived in the 55th minute.
Sunderland were awarded a penalty after a challenge inside the visitors box, giving Enzo Le Fee a great opportunity to put the home side ahead.
However, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced a brilliant save, diving to his left and pushing the spot kick onto the post before the danger was cleared.
The save lifted the Champions and completely changed the momentum of the game. Just two minutes later, Mikel Arteta’s side made the home team pay for the missed opportunity.
Bruno Guimaraes, who had come on as a halftime substitute, scored his first goal for the club in the 57th minute. The Brazilian midfielder collected the ball outside the penalty area and curled a superb effort beyond goalkeeper Robin Roefs and into the top corner.
It was a moment of real quality and gave the Gunners a 1-0 lead against the run of play. After falling behind, the vistors pushed forward in search of an equalizer which wasn’t happening for them.
The hosts created pressure and forced the away side to defend deep at times. Nordi Mukiele and Brian Brobbey were among Sunderland’s brightest performers all through.
Arsenal relied on the experience of players such as Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard to control important moments of the game. Raya was once again called into action and made another crucial save to preserve Arsenal’s advantage.
The visitors had chances to extend their lead before the end of normal time. Saka tested Roefs with a strong effort, while Sunderland defender Dan Ballard cleared another opportunity off the line.
The visitors remained patient and eventually sealed the result deep into stoppage time. The second goal arrived in added time when Bruno Guimaraes played a key role in the attack.
His pass released Bukayo Saka, who was brought down inside the penalty area by Reinildo. The Sunderland defender received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the home side with ten men.
Saka stepped up and calmly converted the penalty in the 90+ minutes to make it 2-0 and secure all three points for the Gunners. Guimaraes was credited with the assist for the move that led to the penalty.
The victory means Arsenal have won their opening four Premier League matches and remain firmly at the top end of the table.
While the scoreline suggests a comfortable evening, Sunderland made life difficult for the champions and can take positives from their performance despite the defeat.
The Premier League Champions, however, showed the qualities of a title-winning side by surviving pressure, taking their chances, and delivering when it mattered most.
Arsenal claiming all three points came as no surprise against Sunderland, as they have been unstoppable since the new season kicked off with their encounter against Coventry City.
