Premier League enters three-week break as international football takes centre stage

The Premier League has paused for an extended international break, giving clubs and supporters three weeks to reflect on the opening five weeks of the 2026–27 campaign.

The longer interruption comes after an eventful start to the season, with Arsenal initially setting the pace before Brighton & Hove Albion ended their perfect record before the break.

Arsenal had appeared to establish early control at the top of the table, raising questions about whether the title race could become one-sided. Brighton’s result, however, provided an early reminder that the champions could still be challenged as the season develops.

With domestic football temporarily suspended, attention has now shifted towards international competition.

National teams are gathering for the first time since the 2026 World Cup, while European countries are beginning their campaigns in the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League.

Why is the Premier League taking a three-week break?

The Premier League will not return until October 10, when Arsenal are scheduled to resume the campaign at home against Leeds United.

The extended break is the result of changes to the international calendar approved by FIFA in 2023.

Instead of having separate international windows in September and October, the two periods have effectively been combined into one longer window. The season will then have further international breaks in November and March.

The change means supporters will have to wait longer than usual before seeing their clubs return to domestic action.

The disruption also extends beyond England, with major European leagues pausing their schedules while international fixtures take priority.

For Premier League managers, the break provides an opportunity to work with players who remain at their clubs, although the majority of their senior squads have travelled around the world for national-team duty.

Nations League provides major European fixtures

The international window will feature a busy schedule in Europe as the new UEFA Nations League campaign gets underway.

Several high-profile fixtures are already attracting attention, including a meeting between England and Spain on September 26.

The fixture will provide another major test for both nations, while Germany and the Netherlands will renew their rivalry on September 24.

France are also scheduled to host Italy on October 2, while Portugal face Norway on October 4 in another match featuring two of Europe’s biggest attacking names in Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland.

The Nations League gives European nations competitive fixtures during the international calendar rather than relying solely on friendlies.

Teams will therefore have an opportunity to build momentum and assess their squads ahead of the next major international tournaments.

South American teams remain busy

The international schedule is not limited to European football.

Argentina have a series of fixtures during the window, with matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin providing opportunities for the world champions to continue preparations with their squad.

Brazil also have a demanding schedule, travelling to Australia for two matches before heading to India.

The fixtures will give South American nations another chance to assess players and tactical options following the 2026 World Cup.

When does Premier League action return?

Domestic football is scheduled to resume on October 10, ending the three-week wait for Premier League supporters.

Arsenal will open Matchday 6 at the Emirates Stadium against Leeds United, with the champions looking to respond after Brighton ended their winning start.

The extended break could also have a major impact on the Premier League table as clubs return with different levels of momentum, injuries and squad availability.

For now, though, the focus remains on international football, with several major fixtures scheduled before the Premier League finally returns.
