Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the UFC ended in heartbreaking fashion after a knee injury forced an abrupt stoppage just 69 seconds into his UFC 329 main event against Max Holloway in Las Vegas.
The former two-division champion had not competed inside the Octagon since suffering a gruesome leg break against Dustin Poirier in 2021, with fans eagerly anticipating another chapter in one of mixed martial arts’ biggest careers. Instead, the comeback lasted barely over a minute as injury once again derailed the Irish superstar.
McGregor began the contest aggressively, attempting to establish his trademark striking with two early high kicks. However, both attempts missed their target, and it quickly became apparent that something had gone wrong.
After throwing his opening roundhouse kick, McGregor’s left knee appeared to buckle underneath him, sending him to the canvas. Although the 37-year-old managed to regain his feet, he struggled to find his balance and stumbled across the cage.
Referee Mike Beltran immediately recognized that McGregor could no longer defend himself safely and stepped in to wave off the contest, awarding Holloway victory by technical knockout after just 69 seconds.
The result handed Holloway the revenge he had waited more than a decade to secure after losing to McGregor in their first meeting back in 2013.
Despite having his hand raised, the Hawaiian admitted afterwards that the circumstances left him far from satisfied.
“You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway vs McGregor 3 now,” Holloway said after the fight.
“It is what it is. I’ll sit down with the UFC. There was so much hype for that. We have to run it back one more time. We need one more.
“I was looking forward to this. I was working hard to get to 170 pounds and fight this guy. For it to end like this, it sucks.”
The victory improved Holloway’s professional record to 28 wins in 37 fights while marking a successful debut in the welterweight division after spending most of his career at featherweight and lightweight.
Although Holloway leaves UFC 329 with another major victory, the fight answered very few questions about his future at 170 pounds. His performance was overshadowed by McGregor’s injury before he had the opportunity to showcase how he could compete against larger opponents.
The former featherweight champion remains one of the UFC’s most accomplished fighters, having built a Hall of Fame-worthy career highlighted by a record 13-fight winning streak and memorable victories over some of the sport’s biggest names. His spectacular knockout of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 remains one of the most iconic finishes in recent UFC history.
For McGregor, however, the defeat adds further uncertainty to a career that has struggled to regain momentum in recent years.
It was his seventh professional loss and his fourth defeat in his last five UFC appearances, leaving him with just one victory since 2016. His latest setback also came after months of scrutiny surrounding controversies outside the cage, including legal issues and an 18-month suspension for violating the UFC’s anti-doping policy after missing three drug tests in 2024.
Despite those off-field distractions, UFC officials continued to back McGregor as one of the promotion’s biggest attractions, believing his return would generate enormous interest regardless of the criticism surrounding him.
Before the contest, many analysts believed McGregor’s best chance of victory was to produce an early knockout before Holloway settled into his rhythm. His aggressive opening suggested exactly that approach, but the strategy ended almost immediately when his knee failed during his first attack.
Questions will now inevitably be asked about whether McGregor will attempt another comeback after suffering yet another serious injury, while Holloway faces an equally important decision over his next move.
The 33-year-old could remain at welterweight in pursuit of the trilogy fight with McGregor, although that route carries significant uncertainty given the Irishman’s injury. Alternatively, Holloway could return to lightweight, where he remains a top contender and has a strong case for another title opportunity after defeating Justin Gaethje in one of the division’s biggest fights.
For now, what was billed as one of the biggest UFC comebacks in recent memory ended not with fireworks, but with disappointment, leaving fans hoping the rivalry between McGregor and Holloway will eventually receive the decisive conclusion both fighters wanted.
