Lando Norris delivered a commanding performance to claim his first Formula 1 victory of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading McLaren to a long-awaited return to the top step of the podium after a dramatic race filled with strategy calls, late controversy and mechanical heartbreak.
The Briton recovered after losing the lead to team-mate Oscar Piastri on the opening lap and eventually benefitted from McLaren’s bold pit strategy, which allowed him to leapfrog the Australian during the second round of stops.
The decision left Piastri visibly frustrated over team radio before his afternoon ended in disappointment when a gearbox failure forced him to retire from second place with just over a dozen laps remaining.
Norris made the most of the opportunity, producing outstanding pace throughout the second half of the race to pull clear of the field and secure a comfortable victory.
“My pace today was probably some of the best I’ve ever had,” Norris said after the race. “The car was beautiful to drive and I had confidence. I’m happy to be back and be number one again.”
Max Verstappen finished second after Red Bull’s gamble to switch him onto soft tyres paid off brilliantly. Despite repeatedly complaining about his car over team radio, the Dutchman held off a determined late charge from Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, who claimed third and further strengthened his championship lead.
Antonelli’s podium extended his advantage to 50 points over Lewis Hamilton and 59 ahead of Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
Hamilton initially crossed the line in fourth but received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc. The seven-time world champion endured another frustrating weekend after also being penalised during qualifying.
Russell recovered impressively from a poor start that dropped him to the back of the field to finish seventh, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar claimed sixth. Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.
Aston Martin left Hungary encouraged despite failing to score points, with upgrades showing promising improvements ahead of the summer break.
Formula 1 now pauses for four weeks before returning with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where the title battle resumes with Antonelli holding a healthy championship advantage.
