The opening 45 minutes set the stage for what would become an attritional battle. Despite the Netherlands entering the match as favorites, it was Morocco who dictated the tempo early on.
The Atlas Lions’ midfield pairing of Neil El Aynaoui and teenage prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi effectively stifled Dutch creativity, forcing Ronald Koeman’s side into a more defensive, reactive posture than they were accustomed to.
Morocco’s dominance was punctuated by flashes of brilliance. Around the 20-minute mark, the Atlas Lions nearly broke the deadlock when El Aynaoui rose highest to meet an inviting Achraf Hakimi corner, forcing Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen into a stunning reaction save.
As the half progressed, the match turned increasingly physical, with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke receiving treatment multiple times for head injuries following a series of robust challenges.
The Netherlands finally managed to test Yassine Bounou shortly before the interval, as Micky van de Ven unleashed a powerful effort that the Moroccan keeper tipped over the bar, ensuring the sides went into the break level at 0-0.
The narrative of the match shifted in the second half, linked inextricably to the personal heartbreak of Dutch forward Cody Gakpo. Just two days before the clash, Gakpo had announced the tragic loss of his unborn child.
When the 27-year-old opened the scoring in the 72nd minute, converting a cross from Crysencio Summerville following a slick finish, the atmosphere inside the stadium shifted.

The equalizer sent the Moroccan supporters into euphoria and the match into extra 30 minutes. Extra time remained a tactical stalemate, though Soufiane Rahimi came agonizingly close to winning it for Morocco, only for Verbruggen to produce a sensational point-blank save.
The shootout became a test of nerves. After a series of misses from both sides, including a strike against the post by Hakimi and a miss by Quinten Timber, the pressure reached its peak.
Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou ultimately became the hero, denying Crysencio Summerville with a brilliant save. This paved the way for Ismael Saibari, who stepped up with ice in his veins to hammer the decisive penalty into the bottom corner.
For Morocco, the victory marks another milestone in their rise as a global football powerhouse. They now turn their attention to a high-stakes Round of 16 battle against Canada in Houston on July 4.
