Colombia finished top of Group K after playing out an entertaining goalless draw against Portugal, producing an impressive display that deserved more than a single point despite a dramatic late goal being ruled out for offside.
Néstor Lorenzo’s side controlled large spells of the contest and thought they had secured all three points deep into stoppage time when Davinson Sánchez headed home from Juan Fernando Quintero’s cross. However, celebrations were cut short after VAR confirmed the defender had drifted marginally offside.
Although the match ended without a goal, both teams created enough chances to win in one of the most entertaining 0-0 draws of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.
Colombia started brightly and nearly took the lead inside the opening minutes. Jhon Arias headed over from a promising position before Portugal responded through Rúben Neves, whose effort drifted narrowly wide.
The South Americans continued to pose the greater threat as Jhon Córdoba powered into the penalty area and forced goalkeeper Diogo Costa into an excellent save. Arias was then denied by Neves, who cleared his effort off the line after another dangerous Colombian attack.
Portugal gradually settled into the game but struggled to break down Colombia’s disciplined defence. Cristiano Ronaldo tested Camilo Vargas with a tame free-kick before Bruno Fernandes produced a powerful strike that the Colombian goalkeeper gathered comfortably.
Ronaldo almost found the breakthrough moments later with an overhead kick inside the box, but his effort was blocked before João Félix volleyed over from close range.
Colombia finished the first half strongly, with James Rodríguez dictating play from midfield. The experienced playmaker almost opened the scoring, but Costa reacted quickly to keep out his low-driven effort.
The pressure continued after the restart as Jefferson Lerma unleashed a powerful long-range strike that Costa pushed away with both hands. Richard Ríos, Arias and Gustavo Puerta all had opportunities to break the deadlock, but Colombia lacked the finishing touch despite dominating possession for long spells.
Luis Suárez also wasted a late chance before the game’s biggest moment arrived in the 91st minute.
Quintero delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where Sánchez rose highest to head past Costa. The Colombian players erupted in celebration, believing they had secured a famous victory, only for the assistant referee’s flag and a subsequent VAR review to rule the goal out by the narrowest of margins.
Portugal nearly stole all three points moments later when Rafael Leão raced into the area, but the AC Milan winger dragged his shot wide of the far post from a difficult angle.
Despite failing to score, Colombia’s performance underlined why they finished as Group K winners. They produced 12 attempts during the first half alone—more than Portugal had faced in either of their opening two group matches—and consistently looked the more dangerous side.
James Rodríguez once again demonstrated his importance, becoming the first Colombian player to make 11 FIFA World Cup appearances. While he did not register a goal or assist, the captain orchestrated Colombia’s attacks throughout the contest, creating five chances and completing the most passes in the final third of any player on the pitch.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, endured a frustrating evening after scoring twice against Uzbekistan in Portugal’s previous outing. The veteran forward was limited to just three shots and struggled to influence proceedings as Colombia’s defence kept him quiet throughout his 25th World Cup appearance.
The result ensured Colombia progressed as Group K winners and maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament, while Portugal also advanced after finishing second in the standings.
Colombia will now face Ghana in the Round of 32 on July 3, where Lorenzo’s men will aim to build on another disciplined performance. Portugal, meanwhile, take on Croatia in a difficult knockout clash, with a potential last-16 meeting against Spain awaiting should they progress.
Although Colombia were denied a memorable late victory, their display sent another strong message that they possess both the quality and resilience to challenge the tournament’s biggest contenders.
