Manchester City has issued a stern official statement following a series of disturbing incidents involving racist abuse directed at two of its first-team players, Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi.

The abuse occurred during and after the club’s high-stakes 3-3 draw against Everton on Monday evening, a match that significantly impacted the ongoing Premier League title race.

The dual incidents have sent shockwaves through the footballing community. During the match at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, forward Antoine Semenyo was allegedly targeted with racial slurs by a spectator.

The situation escalated post-match when defender Marc Guéhi became the target of what the club described as vile racist social media posts.

Manchester City put out a statement addressing the whole situation which already led to an arrest of the Everton fan involved.

The statement said: “Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse directed towards Antoine Semenyo at yesterday’s match.

“We welcome the swift action taken by Everton and the police to identify the individual responsible.

“We are also incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guéhi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night.

“We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game.

The response from the authorities was immediate. Everton FC confirmed that they worked closely with Merseyside Police to identify the individual responsible for the abuse in the stands. A 71-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense.

The individual has since been released on bail with strict conditions, including a one-mile exclusion zone around any designated sports stadium for four hours before, during, and after matches.

Everton reiterated their zero-tolerance policy, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in modern society or sport.

This is not the first time Semenyo has faced such hostility this season. Earlier in the campaign, the Ghana international was targeted during a match against Liverpool.

The Premier League and the FA have both released supporting statements, promising the strongest possible consequences for those found guilty of discriminatory behavior, including custodial sentences and lifetime banning orders.

The Manchester City squad and management have rallied around their teammates. As the title race with Arsenal reaches its fever pitch, the club has emphasized that the mental well-being and safety of their players remain the top priority.

Manchester City concluded their statement by reaffirming their commitment to the No Room for Racism initiative, calling for a unified front across all clubs to eradicate prejudice from the sport once and for all.
