Melanie Collins

Melanie Collins has spent more than a decade building one of the more recognizable careers in sports broadcasting, moving from Yahoo! Her personal life has occasionally intersected with her career in ways more consequential than tabloid speculation, including one specific instance where a relationship reportedly cost her a job offer entirely.

She is not married, has no children, and her most talked-about relationship, with retired NHL forward James Neal, appears to have quietly ended in the past year.

Melanie Collins Biography

Melanie Collins

She was born February 6, 1986, in State College, Pennsylvania, to Doug and Nancy Collins. Her father coached the Penn State women’s tennis team, a career that shaped her early exposure to sports and athletics, and she is not related to the former NBA player and coach who shares her father’s name.

Melanie Collins is the eldest of three children, with two younger brothers, Kurtis and Christian. Kurtis played hockey at Penn State.

Collins has spoken warmly about her family on social media, marking her mother’s Mother’s Day with heartfelt posts in both 2021 and 2023, thanking her for a lifetime of support, and jokingly ribbing her brother Kurtis in a 2023 post as their mom’s favorite while thanking him for being her lifelong best friend.

Collins attended Penn State University and graduated in 2008.

Career

Melanie Career

Melanie Collins began working as a bartender while still a student when a coworker suggested she try out for an on-air position, pointing her toward an opening at AccuWeather.

She parlayed that into an internship at WPSU-TV, the PBS affiliate connected to Penn State, which turned into steady on-air work covering Penn State athletics and co-hosting a Nittany Lions-focused program called Let’s Talk About Sports.

After graduating in 2008, she moved to the Big Ten Network as a Penn State football reporter, then spent time with Turner Sports in Atlanta hosting and reporting for NBA TV. From there, Collins became the face of Yahoo! Sports, the biggest role of her career before CBS.

In that position, according to her own official broadcast bio, her assignments spanned nearly every major global sporting event, the Winter Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, the Super Bowl, the NCAA Football National Championship, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NCAA Basketball Final Four, the NFL Draft, the NBA Finals and the World Series.

She also hosted Yahoo! Sports‘ weekly show Fantasy Football Live, and during this period served as a fill-in host for both SportsNation and First Take on ESPN, along with hosting Big Break and Driver vs. Driver on Golf Channel.

Collins joined CBS Sports in June 2018, initially working as a sideline reporter for college football and college basketball on CBS Sports Network before being promoted that same year to the network’s NFL coverage.

She marked seven completed seasons in the NFL on CBS via an Instagram post in 2025 and is set to begin her eighth season in 2026, working consistently alongside the broadcast team of Kevin Harlan and Trent Green.

She has interviewed some of the league’s biggest names, including Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, Tyreek Hill and the late Kobe Bryant.

She currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she trains at a gym called The Tox, and maintains an active Instagram following that has grown past 165,000.

Relationship

Melanie Collins Relationship Status

Melanie Collins was engaged to NHL winger Scottie Upshall in 2009 after the two met while she was covering a game from the sidelines.

The engagement ended in 2013, and the two have remained on good terms since. Upshall is now married to Christina Hale, with whom he has three children, a son and two daughters.

Collins went on to date retired NHL forward James Neal, who spent 14 seasons in the league across seven different teams before retiring in 2022.

The two reportedly met in 2014 and were seen together at various events and on vacations over the following years.

In a 2017 appearance on the Alyonka Larionov podcast, Collins revealed that the relationship had a direct professional cost; she said the NHL Network had approached her for a full-time hosting role, telling her she was their top candidate and that the job was hers to lose, only to pass on her because her relationship with an active NHL player was considered a conflict of interest.

More recent reporting from 2026 indicates that Collins and Neal have since separated, and she is believed to be single as of mid-2026, a shift from earlier years when the two were consistently described as a long-term couple.

Collins was also the subject of dating rumors involving retired MLB star Alex Rodriguez after she attended his 46th birthday celebration on July 27, 2021.

She addressed the speculation directly at the time, saying the two were only friends.
