Barcelona stumbled to a shock defeat to Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, MySportDab reports.

The Catalans were pummelled 5-3 by a dogged Villarreal side at the Estadio Olimpico to tank up pressure on Xavi.

The first half nearly ended barren as both sides struggled fruitlessly to find the back of the net. Four minutes before the break, Moreno fired Villarreal into the lead.

After conceding, the hosts ramped up attempts to find an equaliser without breakthrough. The first half ended with the La Liga champions trailing by a lone goal.

The second half eas no different. Villarreal continued mounting dangerous offensives going forward.

In the 54th minute, the visitors struck again to double the lead and edge close to victory.

Going down by two goals, Barcelona clawed their charges back into the game and scored a quickfire double to peg the visitors to a 2-2 draw.

Gundogan scored in the 60th minute to halve the deficit while Pedri scored 8 minutes later to make it 2-2.

Three minutes after Pedri’s goal, an own goal by Eric Bailly sent Barcelona into the lead but Guedes restored parity for the away side in the 84th minute to make it 3-3.

The game nearly ended in a draw but a late stoppage-time double by Villarreal condemned Barcelona to a second defeat in a row.

Sorloth and Morales’ goals, three minutes apart, saw Villarreal grab an unlikely victory over Barcelona to further rile up pressure Xavi.

Barcelona have now gone winless in their last two matches but will hope to return to winning ways when they take on La Liga title hopefuls Girona on Wednesday.
