After conceding, the hosts ramped up attempts to find an equaliser without breakthrough. The first half ended with the La Liga champions trailing by a lone goal.

In the 54th minute, the visitors struck again to double the lead and edge close to victory.
Going down by two goals, Barcelona clawed their charges back into the game and scored a quickfire double to peg the visitors to a 2-2 draw.
Gundogan scored in the 60th minute to halve the deficit while Pedri scored 8 minutes later to make it 2-2.
Three minutes after Pedri’s goal, an own goal by Eric Bailly sent Barcelona into the lead but Guedes restored parity for the away side in the 84th minute to make it 3-3.
The game nearly ended in a draw but a late stoppage-time double by Villarreal condemned Barcelona to a second defeat in a row.
