The two met in 2014 at The Arc, a bar in Headingley, Leeds, where Carrie worked as a manager after being introduced through mutual friends.

They married in 2018 and have two children together. Carrie has maintained a deliberately private, low-profile public presence throughout Joe’s rise to become England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer.

Carrie Cotterell Biography

Carrie Cotterell

She was born on June 21, 1990, in England. Carrie Cotterell holds British nationality and practices Christianity.

She has generally kept detailed information about her parents and siblings private, consistent with her broader preference for staying out of the public eye despite her husband’s high-profile career.

Before her relationship with Joe Root became public, Carrie worked in the hospitality industry as a manager at The Arc, a well-known bar in Headingley, Leeds.

The role helped her develop strong interpersonal and organizational skills that she would later apply to managing a busy family life alongside the demanding travel schedule of a professional cricketer.

Carrie Cotterell and Joe Root met in 2014 at The Arc in Headingley, Leeds, after being introduced through mutual friends while Carrie was working there as a bar manager.

She has described it as an unlikely yet fitting place to meet her future husband, given the venue’s close ties to Yorkshire’s cricketing culture.

Their relationship developed gradually, beginning as a friendship before growing into something more serious as Joe’s cricket career continued to flourish.

Carrie publicly confirmed their relationship in October 2014 through an Instagram post. Joe proposed to Carrie in March 2016, shortly before that year’s ICC World Twenty20 tournament.

The couple married on December 1, 2018, in a private Christian ceremony in Sheffield, Joe’s hometown. The wedding was attended only by close family and friends, reflecting the couple’s preference for keeping their personal lives out of the spotlight.

Carrie Cotterell has spoken candidly, though only occasionally, about the challenges of being married to an international cricketer.

In one interview, she described Joe as a wonderful person and a devoted father while admitting that she has never become accustomed to his frequent overseas tours, saying it never gets easier, even after years of marriage.

Despite the demands of Joe’s schedule, the couple has built shared routines around the time they spend together. Carrie shares Joe’s enthusiasm for football and golf, and the pair have attended Sheffield United matches together and enjoyed golfing holidays as a couple.

Joe has publicly credited Carrie with helping keep him grounded throughout his career, allowing him to focus on cricket while knowing their family life at home remains stable and secure.

Carrie has largely avoided media interviews and public appearances, apart from occasionally travelling with England’s Barmy Army supporters to watch Joe play.

Her consistent commitment to privacy has earned her admiration from many cricket fans.

Carrie and Joe have two children together. Their son, Alfred William Root, known as Alfie, was born on January 7, 2017.

Their daughter, Isabella, was born on July 8, 2020. Joe announced Isabella’s birth on Instagram by sharing a photograph of himself holding his newborn daughter while embracing Alfie.

Shortly afterward, he entered a seven-day quarantine period before rejoining England’s bio-secure bubble for a Test series against the West Indies.

Joe Root’s Career

Joseph Edward Root made his Test debut for England in 2012 and has gone on to become one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history.

As of January 2026, Root ranked as the second-highest Test run-scorer of all time with 13,943 runs, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar.

He is also England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer and has scored 41 Test centuries, the most by any England batter.

Root served as England’s Test captain from 2017 to 2022, stepping down in April 2022 following the Ashes series, with Ben Stokes succeeding him as captain.

He briefly played for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League during the 2023 season, appearing in three matches, before opting out of the 2024 campaign and later going unsold at the 2026 IPL auction.

His younger brother, Billy Root, is also a professional cricketer. In England’s white-ball formats, Joe wears the No. 66 shirt.
