Wayne Rooney has been confirmed as DC United manager after quitting his job as Derby County manager, MySportDab reports.

The former Manchester United forward takes up the new DC manager role after Chad Aston, who has been an interim boss.

Chad Aston assumed the position as interim manager of DC United after Hernan Losada left the club in April.

Expressing his thoughts on his new role in DC United, Wayne Rooney asserted that he welcomes the challenge of coaching the MLS side.

He said many offers were coming from England and Europe, but he prefers the exciting challenge of returning to his former club as a coach.

Rooney played for DC United in the twilight of his football career from 2018 to 2019.

He also responded to news making the rounds in the English media undermining the MLS compared to the Championships.

The English sports media has seen Rooney’s transition to his new coaching role as a downward move instead of an upward move in his coaching career.

Rooney dismissed such claims as baseless because the MLS is a strong league compared to the Championships.

Rooney’s 17-month spell at Derby County ended in a dramatic series of crises.

The club was saddled with a massive debt crisis, unable to foot the wages of players and staff.

They also suffered point deduction and had to wallow in an appeal against the deduction.

This further increased pressure on the club’s finances, coupled with a failed takeover process.

Rooney resigned his position as manager of Derby County last month, ignoring appeals by the club’s management to continue in his role.

His agent was immediately under probe for breach of FA rules after allegedly stepping in to salvage the club’s financial woes.

Derby County has been relegated from the Championship after finishing 23rd with 34 points.

Rooney is said to walk into another tough challenge at DC United.

DC United is currently second from the bottom of the Eastern Conference table with 17 points from 17 matches.
