OFFICIAL: Madrid Open Cancelled Due To CoronaVirus Spread In Spain

The Madrid Open has now been cancelled for the second time in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, MySportDab reports. 

The tournament was postponed earlier this year due to the global health crisis.

The Madrid Open was pushed further so as to take place later in 2020.

But due to the new rise in coronavirus cases in Spain, the organisers have decided to cancel the event for 2020.

However, the official decision was confirmed in a statement today.

“To show our responsibility for the current health crisis caused by covid-19, and having evaluated the casualties that the pandemic has continued to generate, together with the authorities, we have now decided that 2020 Mutua Madrid Open will not take place in 2020.

“The tournament was initially scheduled from 1st to 10th May, during and, the organisers of the Mutua Madrid Open alongside the ATP and WTA worked together in search of a new date on the new calendar.

“Following the strong cautions by the local health authorities, and having monitored the situation for months, the organisers of the Mutua Madrid Open have decided to cancel the tournament due to the current situation of the covid-19 crisis.

“The next Mutua Madrid Open will be played from 30th April to 9 May 2021. Any fan that chose to keep their tickets after it was previously postponed, are guaranteed tickets for the same tournament in 2021.”
