Top 3 African Players From 2018/19 Premier League Season

As one of the most famous football leagues in the world, the English Premier League continues to draw players from around the globe, including some of the top players of African heritage. Who are some of the best African players in the Premier League to watch? Read on to find out.

Romelu Lukaku

A study of tweets has shown that Romelu Lukaku causes fans more stressand anxiety during matches than any other player. He is also one of the best African-heritage players in the Premier League. Lukaku has followed in his Congolese father’s footsteps to become a famous name in the game of footie.

His father, Roger Lukaku, was capped at international level by Zaire. After a reasonably successful run with the Premier League clubs Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion, Romelu Lukaku joined Everton and helped them to reach a club-record points tally. After being named in the 2016-2017 PFA Team of the Year, Lukaku signed with Manchester United in 2017 for a staggering £75 million. In the 2018-2019 season, Lukaku scored four goals in his first five appearances.

After a brief spell of underachievement, he was back on form as a substitute in Manchester United’s games against Bournemouth and Newcastle United. In both matches, he scored within the first two minutes of coming onto the pitch.

Paul Pogba

Frenchman Paul Pogba, who comes from Guinean heritage, is one of Manchester United’s highest-ranking players. Although he mainly plays as a central midfielder, Pogba also plays as an attacking midfielder and defensive midfielder. Although his career has had its ups and downs, 2019 saw a revival in his form under the Red Devils’ new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

In January 2019, Pogba was integral in helping Marcus Rashford to score his game-winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur. And in a 3-0 win over Fulham, Pogba was named man of the match.

His two goals in that match brought his season tally to a personal best, scoring 11 league goals and 13 in all competitions. By the end of the last season, he had scored 16 goals and 11 assists and was named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Wilfred Ndidi

In 2017, the Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi transferred from Genk to Leicester City in a £17 million deal. He made his debut for the club playing against Everton on 7 January in the third round of the FA Cup, in which Leicester won 2-1. His first Premier League match was a week later, in which Leicester City beat Chelsea 3-0 at home.

Ndidi scored his first goal for Leicester with a long-range shot against Derby County on 8 February 2017. Later that month, Ndidi won 11 of his 14 tackles against Liverpool.

That impressive feat is only bettered by Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté, who made 14 tackles against the same club in January of that year. As Leicester City continue to regain their spot in the upper echelon of the Premier League, Ndidi continues to be one of the best African players in the squad.
