Angie Gutierrez Biography

Her exact birth date has never been reliably confirmed, with different sources providing conflicting years and dates. Angie Gutierrez is generally believed to be in her late 40s or early 50s.
She met Óscar Gutiérrez Rubio, better known as Rey Mysterio, when she was 17 years old after attending one of his early professional wrestling matches.
The two began dating several years before marrying in 1996. Before meeting Rey, Angie had no known connection to professional wrestling.
Some reports, including remarks Rey made during his 2023 WWE Hall of Fame induction speech, suggest that Angie previously worked in the medical field before later taking on other work to help support the family financially.
She has also been described as the owner of a family restaurant. However, these details have not been independently verified by highly reliable sources.
Rey Mysterio’s Wife

Angie Gutierrez and Rey Mysterio married in 1996, when Rey was just 21 years old, early in his professional wrestling career and years before his eventual rise to WWE stardom.
The couple has now been married for nearly three decades and lives in San Diego, California. Rey has spoken about their marriage in strikingly direct terms.
During an appearance on the WWE After the Bell podcast in 2023, he described their partnership by saying, “I always tell her, ‘It’s not I or me. It’s us, what we’ve accomplished together.'”
During his emotional WWE Hall of Fame induction speech in April 2023, Rey tearfully thanked Angie for her love and support throughout his career, acknowledging the sacrifices she made so he could continue wrestling.
The Ultimatum
One of the most significant and previously untold stories about Angie and Rey’s marriage came to light in April 2023, when Rey appeared on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast and revealed publicly for the first time that he had struggled with a serious painkiller addiction during his major WWE run in the mid-2000s following a series of knee surgeries.
Rey explained that Angie confronted him while the two were on vacation after noticing that he was completely out of it.
She gave him a direct ultimatum, telling him plainly, “So when we get back home, you can either take your pills, or you can take your family. You choose.”
Rey has credited that single moment with changing the course of his life, saying it opened his eyes and made him a stronger person.
He flew back to San Diego, spoke directly with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, and checked himself into a rehabilitation facility, telling McMahon that he needed time away to get clean.
McMahon reportedly responded supportively, telling him that it takes real strength to confront a problem like that head-on. The story did not end there.
Roughly three years later, Rey suffered one of the worst injuries of his career, tearing his ACL and spraining his MCL during a match against Alberto Del Rio in San Diego.
The injury was so severe that his knee was described as hanging by a thread. Despite the excruciating pain, Rey initially refused to take painkillers again because of his previous addiction.
Angie Gutierrez took responsibility for carefully managing and controlling his medication during his recovery, providing a level of hands-on support that went far beyond typical spousal involvement.
Children
Angie and Rey have two children together. Their son, Dominik Gutierrez, was born in 1997 and has followed his father into professional wrestling, becoming a prominent WWE performer in his own right.
He has won tag team championships alongside his father and later became a central figure in The Judgment Day faction.
Their real-life father-son relationship also became the basis for a major on-screen rivalry, culminating during Rey’s 2023 WWE Hall of Fame induction when Dominik and his Judgment Day stablemates walked out of the ceremony as part of an ongoing storyline.
Rey later admitted that, despite knowing it was scripted, the moment was genuinely hurtful to experience.
Their daughter, Aalyah Gutierrez, was born in August 2001 and has made occasional appearances connected to WWE programming, including appearing alongside her brother on the game show Celebrity Family Feud in 2022.
Rey made his professional wrestling debut in April 1989 after being trained by his uncle, wrestler Rey Misterio Sr.
He built his early career across Mexican lucha libre promotions and American independent circuits before gaining wider recognition in WCW and ECW during the 1990s.
He joined WWE in 2002 and went on to win the Cruiserweight Championship multiple times, as well as the WWE Championship on two occasions.
He first captured the title at WrestleMania 22 in 2006 in a triple threat match against Kurt Angle and Randy Orton, before winning it again years later in a fatal four-way match.
Rey was released from WWE in February 2015. He spent several years competing for promotions including Lucha Underground, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and AAA before returning to WWE at the 2018 Royal Rumble.
He has since won additional championships, including tag team titles alongside his son Dominik, and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023, one of the greatest honours of his career.
Rey’s father, Roberto Gutierrez, passed away in November 2024 at the age of 76. He also has three brothers: Rogelio, Roberto Jr., and Luis.
