Late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez saw World Champions Argentina staged a dramatic comeback to beat England 2-1 in the semi final clash.

The tension-filled encounter at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia saw the defending Champions overcome a resilient English side, booking their place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

The match began with excellent play as expected when these two footballing giants collide. Both sides approached the game with caution, prioritizing structural integrity over risk-taking.

England sought to exploit the flanks, while Lionel Messi and the Argentine midfield looked to dictate the tempo and probe the English defensive line.
The first half was a tactical stalemate despite how close they came against each other.

John Stones and Marc Guéhi remained disciplined, effectively neutralizing early Argentine attempts to break them down. The intensity was present, with both sets of players receiving cautions as they fought for every opportunity with the ball in the middle of the pitch.

As the halftime whistle blew with the score deadlocked at 0-0, with both national teams unable to find the much needed break which could have put them ahead.

Ten minutes after the interval, the deadlock was finally broken. England launched a blistering counter-attack, with Anthony Gordon accelerating down the flank before clinically finishing the move to put the Three Lions 1-0 ahead.

The goal, confirmed after a tense VAR check, sent the English supporters into a frenzy and forced Argentina to abandon their cautious approach.
For much of the second half, it appeared the Three Lions defensive solidity would hold firm.

However, as the clock ticked into the final ten minutes, the defending champions displayed the championship pedigree that carried them to the title in 2022.

With the finish line in sight, Argentina found a new gear. Enzo Fernandez, who had been orchestrating play throughout the evening, leveled the score in the 85th minute, drilling a composed finish into the net to ignite the comeback.

The momentum had firmly shifted with extra time looming, Lautaro Martinez delivered the ultimate blow. In the 90th minute, with just moments remaining before the referee’s final whistle, Martinez capitalized on a scramble in the box to head home the winning goal.

It was a heart-wrenching conclusion for the Three Lions, who had stood toe-to-toe with the holders for the majority of the evening. The match eventually ended with Argentina claiming a 2-1 victory against England after 90 minutes of action.

The victory marks a monumental achievement for Argentina, who remain on track to defend their crown. They now head to the New York New Jersey Stadium for the World Cup Final which will take place on July 19.

The current Champions will face a formidable Spain side that dispatched France 2-0 in the first semi-final. Meanwhile, England will have to settle for a bronze medal match against France on July 18.

Argentina remain the team to beat with Messi’s brilliance guiding the ship and looking to add another trophy to his collection.

All eyes will be on the final showdown which won’t be an easy one for either of both finalists who will be desperate to claim the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy in New Jersey.
