South African top-flight side Chippa United have confirmed the departure of Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after both parties agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent, MySportDab Reports.

The Betway Premiership club announced the decision on Thursday, ending the 29-year-old’s three-year stay at the side he joined in 2022.

While Nwabali had previously expressed his desire to move on, the timing of the announcement outside the transfer window raises uncertainty over his immediate playing status, unless the agreement was reached before the January window closed, something the club did not clarify.

In a statement, Chippa acknowledged the shot-stopper’s contributions during his tenure. The club thanked him for his service, commitment and professionalism, wishing him success in the next stage of his career.

Nwabali’s performances at Chippa played a key role in his rise on the international stage, earning him a regular place in Nigeria’s Super Eagles setup.

He established himself as first-choice goalkeeper across successive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, enhancing his reputation with consistent displays.

His time at the club also attracted attention off the pitch, notably when Chippa publicly supported Nwabali and Nigeria during their AFCON semi-final clash against South Africa, a stance that sparked debate among some supporters.

This season, Nwabali made 12 appearances, bringing his overall tally for the club to 76. Chippa have rotated options between Dumisani Msibi and Elson Sithole in goal during the current campaign following his reduced involvement.
