Inter Milan have signed defender Manuel Akanji from Manchester City, MySportDab reports.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Serie A giants have reached an agreement with City to sign the player on loan till the end of the season.
Details of the report reveal City will pocket €2m as the loan fee and a buyout clause worth €15m has also been attached.
However, The buyout clause will only be made mandatory under difficult conditions. This implies Akanji could still return to Man City as Inter are not obliged to trigger the buy-out clause.
Akanji fell out of favour in Pep Guardiola’s defensive options this season following the latter’s recent overhaul in the backline.
He had agreed terms with the Serie A side and is open to a permanent contract if he impresses on his shift. Notably, Akanji is the second high-profile Man City defender to leave the club recently.
England international and former captain Kyle Walker was the first top casualty of Pep Guardiola’s sweeping changes in the defense since last summer.
Walker was loaned out to AC Milan before his permanent switch to newly promoted side Burnley on a permanent deal.
Akanji is likely to face a similar fate following this loan deal as Guardiola doubles down on revolutionizing his defense.
The Switzerland international joined Manchester City in 2022 from Borussia Dortmund. He has made 85 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring two goals.
Before this move, he recorded 0 appearances for the club this season in the Premier League and will hope to revive his career taking up a new challenge with Inter in Serie A.
