Nigeria’s D’Tigresses continued their dominant run at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, storming into the semifinals with an emphatic 83-47 victory over Cameroon.
The defending champions extended their unbeaten streak in African competition to 27 games, a run that dates back to 2015, as they aim for a record fifth consecutive title.
Despite Cameroon taking an early 4-0 lead through Jessica Thomas and Maria Ewodo, Nigeria quickly regained control.
2023 MVP Amy Okonkwo opened Nigeria’s account from the free-throw line before a jump shot by Elizabeth Balogun put the team ahead 5-4.
Coach Rena Wakama’s side closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 21-9.
Cameroon fought back in the second quarter to match Nigeria with 20 points, but still trailed 41-29 at halftime.
The third quarter proved decisive as D’Tigresses unleashed a 25-2 scoring run that effectively ended any Cameroonian hopes of a comeback.
Although Cameroon edged the final quarter 16-14, the damage had already been done.
Amy Okonkwo led the scoring with 18 points in just under 19 minutes, but it was a balanced team performance—four players hit double digits, and nearly every player who saw significant minutes scored.
“We played as a team, enjoying the game by doing what we do best,” said forward Murjanatu Musa.
Guard Ezinne Kalu added: “This is the definition of Nigerian basketball—fighting, throwing the first punch, setting the tone. We’re super excited for the semifinals against Senegal.”
Nigeria will face long-time rivals Senegal next.
