Max Verstappen has committed his future to Red Bull until the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season, ending months of speculation that he could leave the team for Mercedes or McLaren.
The four-time world champion had been contracted to Red Bull until 2028, but clauses in his previous agreement could have allowed him to depart at the end of the 2026 campaign. His new deal keeps him with the team for another four seasons beyond his previous contract and represents a major show of faith despite Red Bull’s struggles under Formula 1’s new technical regulations.
Verstappen said his decision was driven by his strong relationship with the team and his belief that Red Bull could return to championship-winning form.
“We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again,” Verstappen said. “This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue.”
The Dutchman joined Red Bull’s junior team, Toro Rosso, in 2015 before being promoted to the senior Red Bull Racing team after just four races of the 2016 season. He immediately won his first race for the team at the Spanish Grand Prix and has since established himself as one of the dominant drivers of his generation.
Verstappen has won 71 Grands Prix and four world championships with Red Bull, with his race victory tally placing him third on the all-time list behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
His decision to remain at Red Bull was far from certain, however, after the team struggled to match McLaren’s pace during the early stages of the new regulations. Verstappen finished second at both the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix, but those results have been among the few highlights of a difficult season.
The lack of performance had previously led Verstappen to express frustration with the direction of the team. He also came within two points of beating McLaren’s Lando Norris to last year’s championship after producing a remarkable second-half comeback from a deficit of more than 100 points.
Despite those concerns, Verstappen ultimately chose to continue his relationship with Red Bull.
“I have always said it: the team is like a second family for me and I feel very at home,” he added. “I came to the team hoping to be able to win races. What we went on to achieve together has been simply lovely and we have shared many incredible moments and won four World Championships.”
The contract extension also comes despite the impending departure of Verstappen’s trusted race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, who is set to join McLaren by 2028.
Verstappen also praised Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over from Christian Horner last year following Horner’s dismissal after a turbulent period for the team.
“Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team,” Verstappen said. “Everyone [at Red Bull’s base] in Milton Keynes believes in what we are building and I am looking forward to the next chapter, fighting for more victories and competing for championships as we continue to shape the future of this team.”
Mekies welcomed the agreement and described Verstappen as fundamental to Red Bull’s success.
“Having Max continue with us and retaining the best driver on the grid is fantastic news,” Mekies said. “His impact on our team and Red Bull’s motorsport story has been transformational and he has been fundamental to everything we have achieved together.”
Although Verstappen’s new contract runs until 2030, the possibility of an earlier departure has not been completely removed. Performance-related mechanisms are understood to remain in place, although the exact details have not been disclosed by either Verstappen or Red Bull.
That means the future of the Dutchman could still become a talking point if Red Bull fails to provide him with a car capable of fighting for championships. However, the new agreement gives the team greater stability and removes much of the uncertainty that had surrounded the driver market.
The announcement was also timed to coincide with Verstappen’s final home race of the season before the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort drops off the Formula 1 calendar.
For now, Verstappen’s focus will remain on helping Red Bull recover its competitiveness. The team will hope his long-term commitment can provide the foundation for another championship-winning era, while Verstappen will look to add more victories and titles to a career that has already placed him among Formula 1’s greatest drivers.
