Xabi Alonso officially opens his Chelsea account with a narrow 2-3 victory against Fulham during both teams opening Premier League game of the 2026/27 Season.

The West London derby delivered plenty of entertainment, five goals, and several talking points as the new Blues manager secured a winning start to life.

The visitors made a dream start and took the lead after just 31 seconds. Joao Pedro found the back of the net with Chelsea’s first real attack of the game after being set up by Cole Palmer.

The early goal stunned the home crowd and gave the Blues immediate control of the match. The strike was also one of the fastest opening goals in Premier League history and the quickest scored by Chelsea at the start of a league season.

The World Champions looked dangerous throughout the opening stages and created several chances to increase their advantage. However, Fulham gradually settled into the match and found a way back in the 23rd minute.

Joshua King punished a defensive mistake to level the score at 1-1 and bring the home supporters back into the game. Fulham’s equaliser rewarded their improved performance after a difficult opening period.

The Blues responded well to the setback and continued to push forward. Their pressure paid off four minutes before halftime when new signing Morgan Rogers scored on his debut.

The attacking move was well worked, and Rogers calmly finished to restore the lead. The goal ensured Alonso’s side went into the break with a 2-1 advantage after an entertaining first half.

The visitors carried their momentum into the second half and extended their lead shortly after the restart. Cole Palmer, who had already provided an assist for the opening goal, got on the scoresheet himself in the 49th minute.

The England international combined brilliantly with Joao Pedro before finishing confidently to make it 3-1. Palmer’s performance was one of the standout displays of the match as he constantly caused problems for Fulham’s defence.

Despite falling two goals behind, the home side refused to give up. The hosts reduced the deficit in the 54th minute when Gonzalo Garcia scored on his debut.

The goal gave them fresh hope and set up a tense final half-hour at Craven Cottage. They pushed forward in search of an equaliser, while their opponent had to defend strongly to protect their narrow lead.

The final stages were packed with drama as Fulham increased the pressure. Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez faced criticism after mistakes contributed to Fulham’s goals, but the visitors managed to hold on.

Chelsea’s defence showed resilience when it mattered most, clearing dangerous attacks and frustrating the home side’s attempts to complete the comeback.

The encounter finished with Xabi Alonso getting off with a 2-3 victory which he would also need to look into a lot of things concerning his defensive which could have been better.

Cole Palmer was undoubtedly the star of the match. He finished with a goal and an assist while playing a key role in the attacking moves throughout the game.

Joao Pedro also impressed with an early goal and an assist, while Morgan Rogers enjoyed a memorable debut by scoring his first goal for the club. For Fulham, there were positives despite the defeat.

Joshua King and Gonzalo Garcia both scored and showed promising signs, while the team displayed strong fighting spirit after going behind. However, defensive lapses and their opponent’s quality in attack ultimately proved costly.

The result gives the Blues an important three points on the opening weekend and provides an encouraging start for Xabi Alonso.

In the end, Chelsea’s clinical finishing and the brilliance of Cole Palmer were enough to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory in a memorable West London derby against Fulham.
