Spain vs Austria 3-0: Oyarzabal Brace Sends La Roja to World Cup Round of 16

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice as Spain put up an outstanding performance to overcome Austria 3-0 to book their place at the ongoing 2026 World Cup round 16.

Marc Cucurella was another player who played an important role in the match by delivering two assists. It was a statement performance from the European champions, who effectively ended Austria’s run in the tournament.

The victory marked a significant milestone, as it is Spain’s first knockout match win in this prestigious competition since they last lifted the title in 2010.

From the opening whistle, Spain dictated the flow of the game. Utilizing their signature possession-based style, they smothered Austria in midfield and forced their opponents to defend deep for long stretches.

The first half tested Spain’s patience as they were frustrated with now things were going. They moved the ball with precision, waiting for the right opening in a stubborn Austrian defense.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 36th minute. A brilliant move starting from the right saw Marc Cucurella deliver a perfectly timed cutback into the center of the box.

Mikel Oyarzabal, showing his predatory instincts, was there to slot the ball home, sending the Spain into a 1-0 lead as the game progressed further.

Austria came out for the second half with renewed energy, making two substitutions to inject life into their midfield. However, Spain’s tactical discipline remained unshaken.

They continued to hold a majority of the possession, rarely allowing Austria a glimpse of a comeback which could have hurt them so bad.

The breakthrough for the second goal arrived in the 66th minute. Alex Baena, who had been a constant threat on the left wing, floated a beautiful cross into the path of Pedro Porro.

The defender arrived late in the box to thunder a downward header into the net. It was a well-deserved moment for Porro, marking his first international goal.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 89th minute. Once again, it was Mikel Oyarzabal who found the back of the net.

The second strike capped off his brace and effectively ended any lingering Austrian hopes of a late miracle. It was also a brace of assists for Marc Cucurella.

While the three goals were the headlines, the defensive performance was equally impressive. Goalkeeper Unai Simon recorded another clean sheet, maintaining Spain’s perfect defensive record in the tournament.

The center-back partnership of Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte proved impenetrable, dealing with everything the Austrian attack threw at them.

It was a valiant effort for Austria, but they struggled to break the rhythm of a Spanish side that looked truly comfortable all throughout the 90 minutes.

Despite their best attempts, especially through late surges by their substitutes, the gap in quality and composure was evident.

With this 3-0 win, Spain moves forward to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between Portugal and Croatia.

As the squad heads into the next round, the mood in the camp will undoubtedly be one of confidence. They are playing with joy, intelligence, and a level of control that few teams in the world can match.

If they continue to perform at this level, the road to the final will be a daunting one for whoever stands in their way.

Austria will have to count their losses after this one as they failed to do anything much against Spain who bossed them around and snatched a clean victory.
