The Three Lions of England escaped through to the Quarterfinals after claiming a narrow 3-2 victory against co-host Mexico in a heated round 16 clash.
In a match that will be remembered as a modern classic, Jude Bellingham fired a quick brace which placed the Lions in a good place before the controversial moment in the match.
The encounter delivered everything a knockout game promises with lightning-fast goals, a controversial red card, and a dramatic finish that kept the fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
The tone was set early, though the start was delayed by nearly an hour due to severe weather over Mexico City. Once the action began, England dominated the early proceedings.
Jude Bellingham emerged as the star of the first half, silencing the home crowd with two goals in the span of just 98 seconds.
His first strike came in the 36th minute, a powerful header off a precise cross from Bukayo Saka. Before the Mexican defense could regroup, Bellingham struck again in the 38th minute, tucking home a low feed from Harry Kane.
These two quick goals gave England a commanding 2-0 lead and put them firmly in control of their quarter-final destiny as they approached halftime.
Mexico, however, refused to fold under the pressure of the daunting deficit. The host nation roared back into the game just before half-time.
In the 42nd minute, Julian Quinones found the back of the net after a free-kick caused chaos in the English penalty box, cutting the lead to 2-1 and sending the home supporters into a frenzy.
The momentum shifted dramatically early in the second half. Just nine minutes after the restart, England’s defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a dangerous tackle.
Reduced to ten men, the Three Lions were forced into a defensive shell, with manager Thomas Tuchel bringing on John Stones to shore up the back line.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, England’s resolve remained unbroken. In the 60th minute, they earned a penalty when Anthony Gordon was brought down by Mexico’s goalkeeper, Raul Rangel.
Captain Harry Kane stepped up and coolly converted from the spot, extending England’s lead to 3-1. It was looking good for the Englishmen despite their disadvantage
The drama did not end there between both national teams. In a unique turn of events, Harry Kane later conceded a penalty himself, allowing Raul Jimenez to score for Mexico in the 69th minute.
That goal tightened the score to 3-2, setting up a nervy final 20 minutes plus extensive stoppage time during the match.
Mexico threw everything they had at the English goal in a desperate attempt to force extra time. They came agonizingly close on several occasions, but Jordan Pickford and the English defense stood tall, repelling wave after wave of attacks to protect their slim advantage.
The game eventually came to an end as England claimed a 3-2 victory against Mexico. It was a match which could have gone anywhere due to the rest card that was shown.
With this famous victory, England moves on to the quarter-finals for the third consecutive World Cup. Their next challenge is a massive match against Erling Haaland’s Norway on July 11 in Miami Gardens.
The co-host, Mexico bows out of the World Cup 2026 despite giving their all to try and salvage something from the match all through the 90 minutes.
For the Three Lions, the result at the Azteca serves as a major boost of them as they are expected to face in-form Haaland who destroyed Brazil.
England will hope to make it through into the final four where anything can happen for any national team who make the most push to play in the final.
