Chelsea has officially unveiled Marco Palestra as their new and first signing under Xabi Alonso who is expected to resume his duties in the coming days.

As the club begins a new chapter under the guidance of their Spanish manager, Chelsea has wasted no time making their mark in the transfer market.

The Blues officially unveiled Marco Palestra as their first signing, signaling a clear intent to reinforce their squad with high-quality, versatile talent.

The acquisition of the 21-year-old Italian international from Atalanta is a significant move for Chelsea. Valued at approximately £43 million, the defender arrives in London with a growing reputation across Europe.

Palestra, who spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Cagliari, enjoyed a standout campaign that saw him earn individual recognition as the Serie A Defender of the Season.

During his time at Cagliari, he made 37 appearances in the Italian top flight, contributing directly to the team’s efforts with both goals and assists.

Beyond the raw numbers, his ability to operate comfortably as either a right-back or a wing-back makes him an ideal fit for the tactical vision Alonso is expected to implement at his new club.

Xabi Alonso preference for formations that utilize attacking wing-backs aligns perfectly with Palestra’s skill set. Having the capacity to switch between defensive duties and providing width in the final third gives Chelsea a tactical flexibility that was often missing in previous seasons.

For his part, Palestra appears eager to embrace the challenge of the Premier League. In his first official comments as a Blue, he highlighted the project at Stamford Bridge and the influence of his new manager.

Palestra said: “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world.

“I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me.

“I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager.

“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi.

“He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.’

His contract will runs until 2033, showing the club’s long-term commitment to developing a winning culture under Alonso’s leadership.

While securing Palestra is a vital first step, the work at Cobham is only just beginning. With the official start of Alonso’s tenure new week, the club is expected to be highly active in the coming weeks.

Reports indicate that the Blues are currently pursuing other targets to solidify their defense and midfield, as they look to restore competitiveness both domestically and in European competitions.
