Erling Haaland scored a late winner which sent Norway into the 2026 World Cup round 16 against Ivory Coast in a match that ended in a hard-fought 2-1.

Norway punch their ticket to the next stage, where they are now set to face five-time champions Brazil in what will be another massive match for them.

The game began with both teams showing a clear sense of urgency. Ivory Coast, playing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, looked determined to make history.

The Ivorians threatened early through quick attacks down the flanks, with Nicolas Pepe providing a constant outlet.

However, it was Norway who broke the deadlock. In the 39th minute, Antonio Nusa stepped up for his side with a wonderful goal.

The winger produced a brilliant curling effort that found the back of the net, giving Norway a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

Despite the deficit, the Elephants remained disciplined and continued to search for a way back into the match before they headed for the break.

Returning from the interval, Ivory Coast intensified their pressure. Head coach Emerse Fae made tactical adjustments to push for an equalizer, and his efforts paid off.

In the 74th minute, substitute Amad Diallo ignited the crowd. After a slick one-two pass with Pepe, Diallo weaved through the penalty area and fired a precise shot past the Norwegian goalkeeper.

The equalizer leveled the playing field at 1-1, setting up a frantic final quarter of the match which both teams were very alerted.

With both teams pushing for a decisive goal to avoid extra time, the match entered its closing moments.

Erling Haaland, who had been kept relatively quiet by the Ivorian defense throughout the game, showed his class when it mattered most.

In the 86th minute, Norway launched a rapid counter-attack. A well-worked team movement culminated in Haaland slamming home the winning goal.

The strike not only secured the 2-1 victory but also placed the City striker in elite company, as he became one of the few players in history to score in each of his first three World Cup appearances.

The Norway’s victory marks a significant milestone as they move deeper into the tournament.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast loss is one they would blame themselves, but their performance on their debut knockout stage appearance has earned them widespread respect.

Norway now faces the daunting task of preparing for a Round of 16 clash against Brazil, while the Ivorian team heads home, proud of their competitive run in the 2026 World Cup.
