Ivory Coast 2-0 Curacao: Nicolas Pepe Brace Makes World Cup History

Nicolas Pepe scored a brace as Ivory Coast outclassed Curacao 2-0 to seal their place into the knockout phase.

The result, delivered in their final Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, propelled the Elephants into the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time in their history.

The match was effectively decided by the brilliance of Nicolas Pepe, who authored a stunning brace to dismantle the resilient Curacao defense.

Pepe opened the scoring in just the 7th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by the Caribbean side.

After a turnover in the final third, a precise cross from Yan Diomandé found Pépé, who clinically directed the ball into the net with his left foot.

Despite Curaçao’s gritty attempts to find an equalizer through a spirited long-range effort from defender Sherel Floranus in the 55th minute, but the Ivorian attack remained relentless.

Pepe doubled the lead in the 64th minute, cementing the victory and effectively ending Curaçao’s hopes of a Cinderella run in their tournament debut.

Under the guidance of coach Emerse Fae, the Ivory Coast displayed both tactical composure and defensive maturity.

Facing a Curaçao side that had famously held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw behind goalkeeper Eloy Room’s 15-save performance, the Elephants played with clear purpose.

While Curaçao maintained a structured approach pitting their disciplined, Dutch-influenced tactical setup against the Ivorian dynamism, they ultimately lacked the clinical edge required to overcome the two-goal deficit.

The referee ended the encounter with Ivory Coast claiming a 2-0 victory which ensured they claimed all three points for their last group stage match.

The final whistle brought scenes of jubilation to the Philadelphia crowd, as the Ivorian players celebrated their historic qualification for the Round of 32.

For Curaçao, despite the loss and elimination, the tournament served as a testament to their growth on the global stage.

Having arrived as the smallest nation to ever compete in the tournament, their defensive resilience throughout the group stage captured the imagination of football fans worldwide.

As the group stage concludes, the Ivory Coast now shifts its focus to the Round of 32, buoyed by the momentum of a historic win and a squad that has proven it can deliver under pressure on the world’s biggest stage.

Another African national team booked their place in the round 32 which wasn’t a thing that happens more often during the World Cup.
