Francisco Conceição scored the winner as Portugal rounded off their World Cup preparations beating the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1.

Despite the match being a friendly, it did not look that way as both teams were very competitive all through the 90 minutes.

The match began with Portugal showing clear intent to dictate the tempo. Manager Roberto Martínez utilized a 4-2-3-1 formation, reintegrating several key players including Vitinha and Nuno Mendes.

The hosts found their breakthrough in the 22nd minute when Pedro Neto capitalized on the pressure to slot home the opening goal, putting Portugal in the driving seat.

However, Nigeria, coached by Éric Chelle, demonstrated the resilience that has defined their recent unbeaten run.

Despite being without stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, the Super Eagles responded with purpose.

Their persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Akor Adams found the back of the net, silencing the home crowd and bringing the sides level before the interval.

The second half saw a flurry of tactical adjustments as both managers looked to test their depth. Portugal introduced a wave of fresh legs at the break, including Bernardo Silva, João Félix, and Rúben Neves.

The high volume of substitutions temporarily disrupted the rhythm of the game, leading to a cagey period marked by a cooling break in the 67th minute.

As the match neared the final quarter, the deadlock remained. It took a moment of individual brilliance from substitute Francisco Conceição to break the stalemate.

In the 74th minute, Conceição collected the ball on the edge of the box, cut inside onto his left foot, and unleashed a powerful, angled strike into the far corner of the net, leaving Nigeria’s goalkeeper Maduka Okoye with no chance.

The closing stages were defined by Portugal’s efforts to manage the game and Nigeria’s late push for an equalizer.

Despite late pressure and four minutes of added time, Portugal held firm to secure a morale-boosting win.

The match ended with the Portuguese national team claiming the victory in their final warm ups ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup which kicks off tomorrow.

For Portugal, the victory is a significant confidence builder, marking back-to-back friendly wins ahead of their departure for the World Cup.

The performance highlighted both their squad depth and their ability to unlock stubborn defenses in tight fixtures.

For Nigeria, while the result was a disappointment, the team showed they could compete toe-to-toe with elite European opposition.

The game also showed Éric Chelle with valuable insights into his squad’s readiness for future competitive challenges.

As the final whistle blew in Leiria, both sides left the pitch knowing they had been thoroughly tested.

Portugal now shifts its full focus toward its opening World Cup group stage matches, while Nigeria looks to build upon the positives of their competitive display in Portugal as they continue to evolve under their current leadership.

Portugal might have claimed the victory, but the Super Eagles of Nigeria showed a lot of courage going up against a formidable side filled with Champions.
