Raphinha Reveals Why Snubbing Chelsea and Arsenal Saved His Career

Barcelona’s Raphinha recently opened up about the pivotal moment he chose Catalonia over two  London teams who made offer to him during his time with Leeds United.

The Brazilian winger stands as one of the most decorated and statistically dominant players in Europe, but he hasn’t forgotten the intense transfer saga that nearly took him to the English capital.

In a candid look back at his 2022 exit from Leeds United, Raphinha confirmed the open secret of that summer which saw two London’s heavyweights were desperate for his signature.

Raphinha said: “I had offers from a Blue team and also a Red team from London.

“The financial offers were very high, and the Premier League is a place I respect deeply.

“But the best decision of my career was signing for Barcelona.

At the time, Chelsea had reportedly agreed to a fee in excess of £50 million, while Arsenal remained in constant contact with his camp.

However, Raphinha’s heart was set on the Blaugrana, driven by childhood dreams of following in the footsteps of idols like Ronaldinho and Neymar.

The decision has aged like fine wine. Since the arrival of Hansi Flick in 2024, Raphinha has transitioned from a traditional winger to a relentless goal-scoring machine and a vital creative hub.

His 2025/26 campaign has been nothing short of spectacular. In May 2026 alone, he netted a brace against Real Betis and played a key role in a 2–0 Clásico victory over Real Madrid.

This season, he has recorded 29 goal involvements in just 33 appearances. He has secured his third La Liga title alongside a Copa del Rey and multiple Supercopa trophies.

Raphinha’s versatility playing on both flanks and as a central playmaker has made him indispensable.

His breakout 2024/25 season, where he scored 34 goals and provided 22 assists, saw him finish fifth in the Ballon d’Or voting, silencing any critics who once questioned his price tag.

Despite persistent rumors linking him back to the Premier League or high-value moves to Saudi Arabia in early 2026, Raphinha’s stance remains unwavering.

Now serving as the club’s third captain, his leadership is as valued as his output. He credits the stability of Barcelona and the trust of the coaching staff for his evolution.

Raphinha is preparing to lead Brazil into the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the tournament’s premier stars.

He is expected to make it count at the World Cup with Brazil being tagged one of the favorite to go on and win the title.
